July 2016 | The College hosts study abroad programs in England (Theatre), Italy (Art and Design), Mexico (Art and Design), Spain (Journalism and Mass Communication), and England/ France (Journalism and Mass Communication); Hank Hehmsoth (Music) is a Fulbright Specialist in Chile, with Keith Winking, Russell Haight, and Utah Hamrick joining him for master classes and performances; TxStatePresents caps season of record attendance and ticket sales with 171 performances attended by 28,436 people and over $230,000 in sales. June 2016 | Music hosts 7 th International Piano Festival and the Dickinson Piano Competition, with the winner receiving a recording contract; Communication Design students attend TypoBerlin Conference; Art and Design begins a student exchange agreement with Jade University of Applied Sciences in Wilhelmshaven, Germany; academic units host 12 summer camps, attended by over 1,600 grade school and high school students. May 2016 | A record 63 graduate students earn their master’s degree and nearly 700 students earn their undergraduate degree in the College of Fine Arts and Communication ; Music hosts their 17 th annual Feria del Mariachi; the Mariachi and Salsa ensembles conduct a 10-day tour of California. April 2016 | Opera presents world premiere of Lady Bird: First Lady of the Land , co-written by Tony-winner Sheldon Harnick; the Elton Abernathy Forensics Society takes 2nd place at the National Forensics Association National tournament; Texas State wins 1 st Place in District 10 of the American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising Competition. March 2016 | Merge Dance Company presents iMerge , their 8 th annual concert; Journalism and Mass Communication faculty and students team up for SXTXState, their 9 th year covering the SXSW Interactive conference; JMC joins university students from around the world in the Global News Relay; Texas State’s Art Gallery presents Jade Walker’s Four Cornered , which wins the Austin Critics Table Award for Best Solo Gallery Exhibition. February 2016 | Communication Studies hosts its 28th annual COMM Week, with keynote speeches by alums Kuro Tawil and Shawn Turner; Music hosts their 26th annual Hill Country Jazz Festival; before retiring after 42 years, Phil Salem orchestrates a national Organizational Communication Conference; Communication Design alum Sarah Dodds (2004) wins her 2 nd Grammy Award for packaging design; Martin McCain receives two Global Music Awards silver medals; Carolyn Watson earns an American Prize for Conducting.
