Faculty Accolades Faculty are cited in prominent media outlets like Nieman Reports and PBS MediaShift. Tey are published in numerous top journals including: Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly; International Communication Gazette ; Communication Teory ; Journalism Studies ; Mass Communication and Society ; International Communication Bulletin ; Journal of Interactive Advertising ; Journal of International Consumer Marketing ; International Journal of Mobile Marketing ; Social Science Research ; Newspaper Research Journal ; Journalism Studies ; American Journalism ; Asian Communication Research ; Chinese Journal of Communication ; Brazilian Journalism Research ; and Global Media Journal. Opportunities to Excel Students in Digital Media gain practical experience through our innovative South By Southwest project (SXTXState.com) and participation at media conferences, including the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ) and the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR). Students gain practical experience working in student media: Te University Star (newspaper), KTSW 89.9-FM (radio), Bobcat Promotions (student-run PR frm) and the student-produced cable television newscast, Bobcat Update . Te University Star , KTSW 89.9 FM, and Bobcat Update regularly earn awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA). Te University Star was recently awarded First Place, Best in Show, at the TIPA conference; individual students won First Place in Sports Feature Writing and in News Feature Writing. Advertising Club students take a yearly feld trip to visit agencies throughout the nation, as does the student-run public relations frm, Bobcat Promotions. Student organizations include: Te American Advertising Federation (AAF); the Ad Club; the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA); the Latino Communication Association, Bobcat Promotions, the Association of Hispanic Journalists at Texas State, the Texas State Broadcasting Society, Women Communicators of Austin at Texas State, the Social Media Club (SMC); and the Society of Professional Journalists. Partnership projects connect students directly with industry professionals. Advertising students conducted market research for Hewlett-Packard, Wells Fargo and Texas State athletics while Electronic Media students worked with the Round Rock Express, a Minor League Baseball club, and Texas State athletics. Our signature event, Mass Communication Week, features more than 25 events with 50-plus speakers representing the felds across the discipline. Students attend and cover events, create media content, network for jobs and internships and interact with alumni and advisory council members. Texas State University’s American Advertising Federation team has won the National Championship twice and placed in the top four an additional seven times since 1990. Te University Star , KTSW 89.9 FM, and Bobcat Update have earned state, regional and national awards, including honors from the College Media Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. KTSW’s staf recently won a national CMA frst place award for Best Podcast, and Te University Star was named Best in Show by TIPA. Highlights One of only three public universities in the state that is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC); nationally, less than 25% of programs are ACEJMC accredited. In 2014-15, the ACEJMC site-visit evaluators noted “an impressive record of student accomplishment in national, regional and state competitions,” and “a faculty well balanced in academic and professional experience and expertise and committed to educating and mentoring students for productive careers in the digital world.” Faculty are actively involved with the Public Relations Society of America, the Society of Professional Journalists, the National Press Photographers Association, the American Advertising Federation, the Scripps Howard Foundation, and the Knight Journalism Fellowship program. I would sit on the couch and watch sports with him as a little girl. Even on my highchair when I was a baby, I would only watch sports.
