• • • A YEAR IN REVIEW • AUGUST 2016 • OCTOBER 2016 • DECEMBER 2016 In the College of Fine Arts and Communication nearly 400 faculty and staf welcome 5168 majors and 1546 minors to campus for the fall semester; university enrollment is 38,808, with students representing all 50 states as well as 66 nations; Journalism and Mass Communication host their 27th annual Mass CommWeek, with more than 50 industry leaders in attendance; Communication Studies alum Kuro Tawil earns a Forbes 30 Under 30 nomination Art and Design faculty present their work in Italy and South Korea; Steven and Susan Beebe’s 10th edition of Public Speaking: An Audience-Centered Approach is one of ten books included in the new IBMWatson initiative Texas State becomes a majority- minority campus, with student demographics of 48%White, 35% Hispanic, 11% African American, 2% Asian, 2% Multi-Racial, and 1.5% International; for the second for his company’s work on behalf of women across the world; Merge Dance Company performs in Trinidad at the 2016 COCO Dance Festival to provide voice-activated, interactive educational material for international distribution; the College sets a record with 16 individuals or teams earning Research Enhancement Grants, the straight year the Bobcat Marching Band begins practice with a record 350 members. most of any College on campus. • SEPTEMBER 2016 College hosts its 2nd CoSearch Research Startup Weekend; Teatre hosts 13th Annual Black and Latino Playwrights Conference and honors Regina Taylor; Dance and Philosophy host “Engagement: Symposium of Philosophy and Dance”, an event featuring international scholars as well as performances by Mark Morris Dance Group, Erick Hawkins Dance Company, and ARCOS Dance. NOVEMBER 2016 Teatre sets an attendance record for their production of Legally Blonde ; a student Communication Design team wins a 2016 GDUSA award for developing a smartphone app that encourages political participation among high school students; Journalism and Mass Communication is one of 46 schools selected to join the Google News Lab University network. JANUARY 2017 Journalism and Mass Communication students on our Texas State Global News Team travel to Nicaragua with Nursing students to cover their medical work in rural villages; Bobcat Promotions conducts a week-long Professional Development Tour in New York City; Communication Design major Pedro Moreno is one of 66 students featured in GDUSA’s “Students to Watch in 2017”; Communication Design students win over 30 awards in competitions held by Graphis Inc. and the American Institute of Graphic Arts. 24 | COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION
