SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN ABOUT ART With over 1000 majors, Texas State’s School of Art and Design is one of the largest schools for the visual arts in the country. Te school ofers undergraduate degrees in Communication Design, Studio Art and Photography, Art Education, and Art History, and a Master of Fine Arts degree in Communication Design. Art and Design students come primarily from Texas, but their achievements spread well beyond the state. Housed in the Joann Cole Mitte and Sabinal buildings, our students invest holistically in their own education, providing a model for other regional and national art programs. Supporting this endeavor are the more than 80 diverse faculty members dedicated to fostering conceptual and technical abilities necessary for artistic expression. FACULTY ACCOLADES Art and Design faculty have been recognized nationally and internationally for their creative work through commissions, grants, residencies, and exhibitions. Tey have earned accolades from the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, CEC Artslink, the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas Commission on the Arts, Disjecta Contemporary Art Center (Portland), Artpace, the Harry Ransom Center, Te Contemporary Austin and the American Advertising Federation. Teir scholarly work is consistently published in leading periodicals and journals. Faculty work has been published or has appeared in print in periodicals such as, Print , Communication Arts and Graphis magazines, as well as Artforum , Modern Painters , New American Paintings , and New City Art . Art Education faculty hold leadership roles in the Texas Education Agency, Texas Art Education Association, and the State Board of Education. NATIONAL RECOGNITION Graphic Design USA magazine selected Texas State University for inclusion in GDUSA 2017 Top Graphic Design Schools. Only 42 colleges and universities in the nation are included in this list compiled by Graphic Design USA magazine. Te MFA in Communication Design was featured in Print Magazine as one of the top 11 programs in the nation. Best Art Colleges.com has ranked Texas State as #2 in the state, #7 in the South, and #31 in the coun- try (top 1.5% of over 2300 schools); the Bachelor’s degree at Texas State is #13 in the country. STUDENT ACCOLADES Communication Design students regularly win design awards from the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Dallas Society of Visual Communications, the American Advertising Federation’s ADDY awards, Te One Show, and the Brass Ring advertising awards. Teir designs are also featured in national design publications such as CMYK , Print , Communication Arts , Graphis, Graphic Design USA , and HOW magazines. Communication Design graduates consistently secure employment at top corporations and design frms across the region and the nation. In the last fve years, over 75 diferent design frms have hired new Texas State graduates. Students earning their BFA in Studio Art and Photography are placed in MFA programs at the top graduate schools in the country, including Yale, Rhode Island School of Design, the School for the Art Institute of Chicago, Virginia Commonwealth University, Cranbrook, Maryland Institute College of Art, Columbia University, School of Visual Arts in New York City, University of California at San Diego, and the San Francisco Art Institute. Our students have been awarded top artist residencies at the widely acclaimed Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, the Vermont Studio Center, the Meet Factory (Prague), and Seoul Artspace (Korea). Student achievements also include high-level job placement at art institutions such as the Detroit Institute of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, Artpace (San Antonio), and galleries like the internationally known Pace Gallery in New York City. Te vast majority of its Art Education graduates are hired to teach in high schools and elementary schools across the state. NATIONAL RECOGNITION Facilities at the JC Mitte Art Building and Sabinal include state-of-the-art computer labs, sculpture, fbers, ceramics, photography, printmaking, painting, digital art, and metals facilities. Te school also has a 3-D printer, laser cutter, and a CNC router lab. Te Texas State Galleries provide over 5,000 square feet of exhibition space, sponsor a visiting Art and Design Lecture Series, and present 15–20 temporary exhibitions each year. Te Texas State Galleries’ Permanent Collection is comprised of American Works on Paper from the 20th and 21st Centuries, as well as a separate category devoted to Texas artists. 28 | COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION
