SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION ABOUT JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Te School of Journalism and Mass Communication, housed in historic Old Main, ofers a nationally accredited curriculum. Undergraduate majors include: Advertising (448 majors), Digital Media Innovation (138 majors), Electronic Media (584 majors), Journalism (247 majors), Mass Communication (169 majors) and Public Relations (827 majors). Students can also earn a concentration in Digital Media, Multimedia Production and/or Sports Media. Te Master of Arts in Mass Communication features concentrations in Strategic Communication, Digital Media, Latinos and Media, and Global Media. Among the largest, comprehensive mass communication programs in the nation with nearly 2,400 majors, the School of Journalism and Mass Communication is the second largest academic school or department at Texas State University. One of 113 programs in the United States accredited by the Accrediting Council for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC); only 3 public Texas universities are ACEJMC accredited. FACULTY ACCOLADES Faculty are cited in prominent media outlets like Nieman Reports and PBS MediaShift. Tey are published in numerous top journals including: Journalism and Mass Communication Quarterly ; Communication Teory ; Journal of Health Communication ; Journal of Drug Education ; College Teaching ; International Journal of Sport Communication ; Journal of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship ; Health Marketing Quarterly ; Journal of Broadcasting & Electronic Media ; Communication Research Reports ; Visual Communication Quarterly ; Journalism Teory , Practice & Criticism ; Journalism and Mass Communication Educator ; International Journal of Advertising ; Mass Communication and Society ; Journal of Interactive Advertising ; Journal of International Consumer Marketing ; Public Relations Review ; International Journal of Mobile Marketing ; and others. OPPORTUNITIES TO EXCEL Graduate students participated and presented their research at media conferences, including the International Symposium on Online Journalism (ISOJ), Online News Association, the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting (NICAR) and the Seoul International Conference on Social Sciences and Management. Texas State University’s American Advertising Federation (AAF) team has advanced to nationals since 1990, winning two national championships, placing in the top four an additional seven times and winning various regional awards. Students gained practical experience working in student media: Te University Star , KTSW 89.9- FM, Bobcat Promotions and the student-produced cable television newscast, Bobcat Update . Te University Star , KTSW 89.9 FM, and Bobcat Update regularly earn awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA). Over the years, University Star students have won First Place, Best in Show, at the TIPA conference; individual students won First Place in Sports Feature Writing and in News Feature Writing. KTSW students have won CBI National Student Production Awards. Partnership projects connect students directly with industry professionals. Advertising students conducted market research for Hewlett-Packard, Wells Fargo and Texas State Athletics while Electronic Media students worked with the Round Rock Express, a Minor League Baseball club, and Texas State Athletics. PR students developed campaigns for the Salvation Army and SWBC Mortgage. Student organizations include: Te American Advertising Federation (AAF); the Ad Club; the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA); the Latino Communication Association, Bobcat Promotions, the Association of Hispanic Journalists at Texas State, the Texas State Broadcasting Society, Women Communicators of Austin at Texas State, the Social Media Club (SMC); and the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ). Advertising Club and Bobcat Promotions students annually visit agencies throughout the nation. Our signature event, Mass Communication Week, features more than 25 events with 50-plus speakers representing the felds across the discipline. PR students have the opportunity to work on the PRSA Bateman Competition Team. Te Media Innovation Lab (MILab) had an outstanding inaugural year. MiLab launched in fall 2016 with a student open lab, teaching lab and maker space. Te frst students in our Digital Media Innovation major graduated in December 2016.
