SCHOOL OF MUSIC ABOUT MUSIC Te Texas State University School of Music proudly provides an intensive and nurturing environment that emphasizes student-faculty interaction and performance opportunities. Faculty guide students to become performers, educators, and scholars. A long-standing, fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music, Texas State has 90 faculty who teach just over 600 students performing in more than 30 ensembles. Award- winning ensembles include the Texas State Opera Teater, Latin Music Ensembles, Jazz Ensembles, and the Bobcat Marching Band. Other elite ensembles include the Texas State Wind Symphony, Chorale, and Symphony Orchestra. FACULTY ACCOLADES Te music faculty of 90 individuals includes 50 internationally active performing, conducting, or composing artists. Collectively, they have performed in more than 30 countries on virtually every continent and have won prestigious prizes such as Grammy Awards, Dallas Concerto Competition, National Finger Picking Championship, Bulgarian National Clarinet Competition, Atlanta Steinway Society Competition, and Fullbright scholars/ specialists. Teir artistry can be heard on hundreds of commercial recordings released on labels such as Deutsche Grammophon, Harmonia Mundi, Sony, Naxos, Columbia, Capstone, Centaur, Rounder, ERM Media, and Nonesuch Records. Our scholar faculty claim many important honors and publications in such prestigious journals as Grove Dictionary of American Music , College Music Symposium , Choral Journal , Computer Music Journal , Journal of Band Research , Journal of Research in Music Education , Music Educators Journal , Teoria , Journal of Musicological Research , and Perspectives of New Music . AWARD-WINNING PROGRAMS AND ENSEMBLES Te School of Music maintains over 30 student ensembles, including choirs, wind bands, symphony orchestra, mariachi ensembles, salsa bands, jazz bands and combos, opera, modern music, percussion ensembles, like instrument ensembles, accompanying, Gamelan Lipi Awan and the Bobcat Marching Band! Ensemble members come from a variety of disciplines across the entire campus. Texas State music ensembles have performed across the U.S. and abroad, in South Africa, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Mexico, Chile, China, and Te Netherlands. Wind bands have won national recognition and appeared at distinguished festivals and conventions such as the College Band Directors National Association. Choral ensembles have performed at the American Choral Directors Association national conference. Percussion ensembles have competed and won indoor drumline and individual awards at the annual Percussive Arts Society International Convention. Jazz and Salsa ensembles have performed at the prestigious Notre Dame Jazz Festival. In addition, band, orchestra, jazz, choral, and like instrument ensembles frequently perform at the prestigious Texas Music Educators Association Clinic/Convention. Students can choose a major in general music, Classical, Jazz, or Latin performance, Sound Recording Technology, music education, conducting, composition, music theory, or musicology.Our Music Education alumni are sought after by public school systems across the entire state. Sound Recording Technology alumni have received jobs in live sound venues and production studios, as well as jobs in post- production editing around the U.S., most notably for Universal Studios. Te School of Music ofers a busy lineup of concerts for the public. In addition to some 60 student ensemble performances, the Stars At Night series features internationally acclaimed guest artists and Faculty Showcases. Students have many opportunities to participate in master classes with guest musical artists and hear lectures by distinguished music scholars from across the U.S. and the world. Te Somos Músicos concert series is designed for music students to perform for each other in a supportive, informal setting. Highlights of each performance season are three annual festivals, which bring students, teachers, and artists from around the world to Texas State; the Hill Country Jazz Festival & Eddie Durham Celebration, Feria del Mariachi, and the International Piano Festival. As a service to the community, the School of Music ofers musical instruction to local children through the Hill Country Youth Chorus, the Texas State String Project, Mariachi Infantil, and numerous summer camps for high-school and middle-school musicians.
