DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE ABOUT THEATRE Texas State University’s Teatre program ofers undergraduate B.F.A. degrees in Acting, Musical Teatre, Teacher Certifcation, Technical Production, Performance and Production, and a general B.A. degree. Its graduate degrees include a Master of Fine Arts with emphases in Directing, Design, and Dramatic Writing as well as an M.A. in Teatre History. It is one of the 15 largest programs in the country. Our students and faculty continue to excel at regional, national, and international levels. FACULTY ACCOLADES Faculty have starred in television shows, performed on Broadway, in national tours, and on original cast albums. Tey have worked at the Kennedy Center, the Lincoln Center, Arena Stage, Illinois Shakespeare Festival, Utah Shakespeare Festival, Zach Teatre, Austin Lyric Opera, Los Angeles’s Colony Teatre, Actors Teatre of Louisville, and Connecticut Repertory Teatre, as well as in international venues in Scotland, Germany, Ireland, France, Spain, South Korea, Colombia, and the Czech Republic. Tey have displayed their scenic, lighting, and costume designs at the Prague Quadrennial. Tey have had their plays produced in New York, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Cleveland, and Cambridge, MA, and their screenplays produced by Hallmark Hall of Fame and NBC. Tey have had articles published in American Teatre , books nominated for awards, and been featured speakers at national and international conferences. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT ACCOLADES Undergraduate students have earned numerous honors at the regional level of the American College Teatre Festival. Tey have advanced to the Kennedy Center as KC/ACTF national fnalists in scene design, lighting design, costume design, sound design, acting, stage management, playwriting, and musical theatre. Tey have been accepted into top graduate programs across the country. Teacher Certifcation graduates have nearly 100% job placement. Alumni are fnding jobs behind-the-scenes in flm and television, including work with major producing organizations and award-winning directors. Te department graduates more theatre students than any other university in the state. Students perform in, design, build and crew up to a dozen shows in four performance spaces every year. 48 | COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION GRADUATE STUDENT ACCOLADES Graduate students have won the O’Neill National Critics Institute Award, the KC/ACTF Ken Ludwig Playwriting Scholarship (fve of the last six years), the Harold and Mimi Steinberg National Student Playwriting Award, the John Cauble Short Play Award, and had their work performed at the Kennedy Center. Tey have advanced to the Kennedy Center as KC/ACTF national fnalists in directing, design, dramaturgy, criticism, and playwriting. Tey have presented research at both national and international conferences and been accepted into top doctoral programs. NATIONAL RECOGNITION BestArtColleges.com ranks Texas State the #9 Performing Arts program in the country. PerformingArtsColleges.com ranks Texas State the #8 Performing Arts program in the country. CollegeMagazine.com ranks the Texas State Musical Teatre program #7 in the country. Teatre has been recognized, at the Kennedy Center/ American College Teatre Festival (KC/ACTF) for the past sixteen years, including 2 Producers Awards, 2 National Selection Team Fellowships, 44 National Finalists, and 13 National Awards. Te department has been cited in the New York Times for having one of the top Acting and Musical Teatre programs in the country. Teatre has earned 45 Austin Critics Table Award nominations in the past six years, winning 18 total awards. Te department has conducted a New York showcase for the past 15 years and a Shakespeare Study abroad for the past 14 years. Te department has hosted the nationally recognized Texas State Black and Latino Playwrights Conference for the past 14 years. Te conference recently received a $25,000 matching grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Recent guest artists include: Tony Award-winners Tony Walton, Christopher Durang, Shirley Knight, and Douglas Turner Ward; Tony nominees Andrew Lippa, Austin Pendleton, and Chris D’Amboise; Emmy Award-winner Larry Grossman; playwrights Teresa Rebeck and Adam Szymkowicz; artistic directors Bonnie Monte and Luis Valdez; and actor/ playwright Regina Taylor .
