College Report 2019 College of Fine Arts and Communication tenure and promot ion aching awa d and pres ident i al excellence award winners Te faculty of the College of Fine Arts and Communication excel as teachers, scholars, artists, and leaders. Te highest individual faculty honor is the designation of University Distinguished Professor; Dr. Mandziuk is only the 4th faculty member from the college to earn this distinction. Each year, the Faculty Senate recognizes the Piper Professor nominee and two runners-up with the Everette Swinney Faculty Senate Excellence in Teaching Award. Te university’s Presidential Excellence Awards recognize and reward superior accomplishments in the areas of teaching, scholarly/ creative activity, and service. 48 59 UN I VERS I TY D I ST I NGU I SHED PROFE S SOR ROSEANN MANDZIUK Professor Communication Studies Dr. Mandziuk joined Texas State in 1987. Her research and teaching focus on rhetorical studies. She is the recipient of two Fulbright Scholar Awards, as well as fve Presidential Distinction Awards for Excellence in Teaching. She served as president of the Southern States Communication Association in 2017, and recently was elected as second vice president of the National Communication Association, ascending to president in 2022. She also served as Presidential Fellow at Texas State, as an American Council on Education Fellow, and has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Service. PRE S I DENT I AL EXCELLENCE AWARD f o r Te a ch i ng KAYSIE SEITZ BROWN Assistant Professor Theatre and Dance Before returning to her home state of Texas, Kaysie resided in New York City where she studied with Dance Education Laboratory and danced, choreographed, and taught with organizations including LEAP, Young Audiences New York, and Notes in Motion. At Texas State, she has served as the director of the arts education outreach program Creation in Motion, a multi-faceted program which includes Creation in Motion Touring Ensemble for Young Audiences or CIM TEYA, an ensemble of dance majors who create and perform interactive works for youth. EVERETTE SWI NNEY FACULT Y S ENATE EXCELLENCE I N TEACHI NG AWARD ANN E. BURNETTE Associate Professor Communication Studies Dr. Burnette teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in political communication, American public address, persuasion, rhetorical criticism, and public speaking. She also works with students from the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center for the legally blind. She has received the Texas State University Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her teaching has also been honored by the Southern States Communication Association and the Texas State Alumni Association. She publishes scholarship on presidential rhetoric, campaign persuasion, women in public address, and freedom of expression issues. PRE S I DENT I AL EXCELLENCE AWARD f o r Scho l arl y and Cre a t i ve Ac t i v i t i e s MICHAEL IPPOLITO Assistant Professor Music Praised by the New York Times for his “polished orchestration” that “glitters, from big-shoulders brass to eerily foating strings,” Michael Ippolito’s music has been performed by leading musicians in venues around the world. Drawing on a rich musical background of classical and folk music, and taking inspiration from visual art, literature and other art forms, he has forged a distinctive musical voice in a body of work spanning orchestral, chamber, and vocal music. EVERETTE SWI NNEY FACULT Y S ENATE EXCELLENCE I N TEACHI NG AWARD PRE S I DENT I AL EXCELLENCE AWARD f o r Se r v i c e CINDY ROYAL Professor Journalism and Mass Communication REBEKAH FOX Associate Professor Communication Studies Cindy Royal teaches web design, coding and digital media innovation courses and is the director of the Media Innovation Lab. She completed her Ph.D. studies at Te University of Texas in 2005. In 2013, Royal was accepted to the Knight Journalism Fellowship at Stanford. In 2013, she was named Teacher of the Year by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching at Texas State. Rebekah’s research focuses on organizational rhetoric and resilience among frefghters and nurses, as well as the rhetoric of environmental and political issues specifcally related to the First Amendment. She is the chair of the advisory board for the Communication Research Center (C3), and has served on numerous departmental, college, and university committees. She also serves as a member of the Capital Area Fire Adapted Communities Coalition and works as a technical specialist in communication for the United States Forest Service.
