College Report 2019 College of Fine Arts and Communication 16 17 ret i red faculty and staff RET I RED AFTER 47 YEARS OF S ERV I CE RET I RED AFTER 18 YEARS ERIK NIELSEN Professor Art and Design Dr. Nielsen was an art education professor and served as director of the School of Art and Design from 2001-2010, and then as coordinator of the Art Education program. He holds degrees and diplomas from the University of Texas at Austin, University of South Florida and the Norwegian Film School. Dr. Nielsen taught courses in art education, photography, printmaking, and design. His work has been shown in many exhibitions both nationally as well as internationally. He has owned and operated several galleries and is presently the director/ owner of D”Art Board, an Art Production Company. SUE L. STEWART Senior Lecturer Communication Studies Sue taught courses in small group communication, professional communication, communication and technology, and leadership; she also served as the director of Undergraduate Studies and director of Internships. She began her career in higher education as a graduate teaching assistant and basic course administrator while completing her Master’s degree in Communication Studies here. After graduating, she worked as an adjunct professor at Austin Community College and St. Edwards University before returning to Texas State. RET I RED AFTER 37 YEARS RET I RED AFTER 18 YEARS MICHEL L. CONROY Professor Art and Design PATRICIA FLEMING Senior Lecturer Music Michel Conroy headed the School of Art and Design’s ceramic arts program for 37 years. During her Texas State career, she received 13 university and college awards for teaching, scholarly creative activity, and service, including the Presidential Award for Excellence in Service. Elected to the Faculty Senate for six terms, she is the longest serving senator in the senate’s 60-year history, serving fve terms as senate chair. Professor Conroy also served seven years on the Board of Directors of the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts, earning the lifetime title, Fellow of the Council. Patricia Fleming began teaching for the School of Music as a lecturer in 2001. She taught courses in music education, and she supervised student teachers. Prior to Texas State, Fleming taught middle school and high school choir for 25 years in Seguin, San Marcos, Austin, and Comal school districts. Fleming is a proud alumnus of Texas State University (then Southwest Texas State), having received both her B.M. and M.M. degrees here. Te School of Music expresses sincere appreciation and gratitude to Fleming for her 18 years of service to our students and school. RET I RED AFTER 37 YEARS JAY JENNINGS Senior Lecturer Theatre and Dance Jay earned his M.A. in Teatre and Speech Communication from Southwest Texas State University in 1980. He spent his life dedicated to teaching and mentoring undergraduate students. Jay’s work as a playwright, director, and actor has received many accolades. In 1987, he earned the LBJ Distinguished Lecture Series Award for his direction of Te Next Amendment . He received a Ford Foundation Grant in 1990 to write and produce Children of the Sun , and his production of Te Medeas won the Director’s Choice for Best Play at the American College Teatre Festival in 2001. RET I RED AFTER 18 YEARS JOANNE ENGEL Administrative Assistant III Music Joanne began working for the School of Music as administrative assistant in 2001. Initially, Engel worked exclusively as the Ensemble admin. Troughout her time at Texas State, she not only assisted every ensemble, but also was the administrative support for all summer music camps. In 2014, Engel was promoted to an Administrative Assistant II, a rank she proudly held until Spring 2016, when she was promoted to the top Administrative Assistant III position in the School of Music. Te School of Music expresses sincere appreciation and gratitude to her for 18 years of service to our students, ensembles, and school. RET I RED AFTER 22 YEARS RET I RED AFTER 17 YEARS BOB HANNA Systems Support Specialist Communication Studies Bob provided expert technology support for the Department of Communication Studies, the Dean’s ofce in the College of Fine Arts and Communication, the College Advising Center, and the Translational Health Research Initiative. Prior to Texas State, Bob worked in a wide range of industries including computer and software sales, service, and marketing as well as real estate, sporting goods, and music. In retirement, Bob plans to spend time with his family, travel, and probably fnd some time for target practice every now and then. SHERRY SNOWDEN Lecturer Art and Design Sherry Snowden began teaching at Texas State University in 2002. She served as Higher Education Division Chair for the Texas Art Education Association, was a member of the National Art Education Association, and was a charter member of the Center for Educator Development in the Fine Arts. Sherry received the 2013 Higher Education Educator of the Year Award from TAEA and was inducted in 2018 as a TAEA Distinguished Fellow. She inspired future educators through her art education classes and for many years proudly served as director of the university’s Kid’s Kollege Art Camp.
