E ret i red faculty and staff RET I RED AFTER 21 YEARS RET I RED AFTER 43 YEARS CHARLE S HURT | Professor , Music Professor of Trombone, Charles Hurt began teaching at Texas State in 1977 and served as Principal Trombonist with the Austin Symphony for thirty seasons. Mr. Hurt holds degrees from the University of Tennessee & Northwestern University. His teachers have included Frank Crisafulli, trombonist with the Chicago Symphony and Professor of Trombone at Northwestern University, and Donald Hough, Professor of Trombone at the University of Tennessee (Ret). Mr. Hurt has been invited to perform and present master classes at many conservatories and universities including the University of Monterrey, Mexico; Hong Kong Baptist University; and the University of Göteborg, Sweden. RET I RED AFTER 20 YEARS RET I RED AFTER 36 YEARS L ARRY CARL SON | Senior Lecturer , Journalism and Mass Communication Larry Carlson taught a dozen diferent courses in 35 years at Texas State, winning SJMC Teacher of the Year accolades and advising the news and sports departments at KTSW. He was awarded a RIAS (Radio in the American Sector) fellowship in 2009 and worked on political interviews in Berlin with other journalists and educators. Troughout his teaching, Carlson remained active in journalism. He edited and wrote for magazines, covered the NFL for AP Radio, created a road trip TV series that aired on ESPN2, produced Canadian Football League games and co-hosted a college football radio show. RET I RED AFTER 19 YEARS RET I RED AFTER 35 YEARS SUE HALL | Administrative Assistant III , Communication Studies Sue Hall began working as Administrative Assistant III in the Department of Communication Studies in December 1989. She provided administrative support to the department chair and to all faculty and graduate assistants. Sue was initially hired in the Chemistry Department in August 1985. During her time in Chemistry she was administrative support to the department and also to Dr. Patrick Cassidy who she worked with on his grants in polymer research. Sue was chosen as Texas State Staf Employee of the Year in 1995. In retirement Sue plans to spend time with her family, travel and pursue volunteer opportunities. RET I RED AFTER 18 YEARS RET I RED AFTER 32 YEARS KATE P I ERCE - BURLE SON | Professor , Journalism and Mass Communication Kate Peirce-Burleson began her 32-year career at Texas State when it was still Southwest Texas. She served as head of the print and general mass communication sequences. While she taught a variety of courses over her career, her favorite was Women, Minorities and Media on the undergraduate level and Gender, Race and Class on the graduate level. She published a book on the subject as well as many journal articles. She was the frst to publish research on teen (girl) magazines and the frst to combine advertising-spoke-character research with gender research. 20 . COLLEGE REPORT 2020 SUS AN W I LL | Associate Professor , Journalism and Mass Communication DAV ID H FNER | Senior Lecturer , Art a d Design Dr. David Hefner, Senior Lecturer: Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, UT, 2008, M.F.A. in Painting, UT, 1991, B.S. Elementary Education/Kindergarten Specialization, 1976, Baylor. Hefner was hired to teach Painting in 1999. In 2001, began teaching in the Art Ed. area and became a Student Teacher Supervisor while continuing to teach, mainly, Painting. Hefner is an Austin Artist, represented by the Davis Gallery since 1991. His work can be seen at handhefnerarts.com. MORR I S NELMS | Senior Lecturer , Music Morris Nelms , pianist/vocalist, grew up in Frederick, Oklahoma. When he discovered jazz at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, he was instantly hooked. He has played jazz music professionally since 1975 and has no desire to stop. Before coming to Texas State, Morris taught at Westmar University in Le Mars, Iowa at the Clark Terry International Institute of Jazz Studies from 1994-97. He served as a Graduate Student/Senior Lecturer at Texas State from 1997-2000. Some noteworthy recordings of Morris’: "Te Best Ting for You Would Be the Cullen Ofer Quartet," with Cullen Ofer; "I’ll Take Romance," with Ken Slavin; and "Noel," with Small World. CHR I ST I NE HANEY | Administrative Assistant II , Art and Design Christine Haney began working at Texas State in 2001 in the Graduate College. She joined the School of Art and Design as Administrative Assistant II for the M.F.A. Communication Design program in 2007. Christine became the soul of the distance program from its inception – and held this position until her retirement in January 2020. Graduate students frequently acknowledged her in their thesis, and she was named Employee of the Month in November 2018 – an award she well deserved: always going above and beyond, not only for the students, but for faculty and staf alike. SUS AN WE I LL | Associate Professor , Journalism and Mass Communication Susan Weill taught undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Journalism & Mass Communication for almost two decades. She co-advised the student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists and served on the Faculty Senate. Her research related to racial and ethnic diversity, an interest she shared with students who took her classes on mass media and society. During the next phase of her life, she plans to fnish an autobiographical novel about growing up in Mississippi during the civil rights movement, volunteer with marine animal conservation and rescue, spend more time with her family and friends, and go kayaking in Iceland.
