december 2019 Craig Hella Johnson and his choral ensemble Conspirare earn their 9th Grammy nomination; Music’s 2019 production of The Magic Flute places 3rd nationally in their division at the National Opera Association; the VocaLibre Holiday Concert and A Merry- Achi Christmas enjoy sold-out performances; twelve faculty earn a year in rev i ew august 2019 october 2019 february 2020 june 2020 In the College of Fine Arts and Communication, nearly 400 faculty and staf welcome 5,136 majors and 1,580 minors to campus for the fall semester; University enrollment is 38,187, with students representing 49 states as well as 70 countries; Texas State remains a majority-minority campus, with student demographics of 44.3% white, 38.3% Hispanic, 10.8% African American, 2.7% Asian, 2% Multi-Racial, and 1.4% International; for the ffth straight year the Bobcat Marching Band begins practice with nearly 350 members. Journalism and Mass Communication host their 30th annual Mass Comm Week, with more than 70 industry leaders in attendance; Teatre presents a near sold-out performance of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead ; Art faculty engaged in international projects in Brazil, Berlin, Belgium, Austria, and Zurich, while Dance faculty engaged in Trinidad, Spain, Mexico, Iraq, South Korea, Brazil, Colombia, and the Netherlands; Johnny McAllister’s flm, Bull , is picked up for distribution by Samuel Goldwyn Films. Research Enhancement Grants, with the College being #2 in dollars awarded this cycle. apr i l 2020 Our National Advertising Student Competition wins its district, and then makes it through the semi-finals to stand as one of eight schools going to the national finals; Communication Design students win twelve Addy Awards in a San Antonio competition; The University Star wins 17 awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, the most of any school in the state; seven students earn a Texas Education Association Collegiate Music Educators Award; Sa Ra Park becomes the College’s first-ever recipient of a Philanthropic Educational Organization International Peace Scholarship. Attacca Quartet, the Ensemble-in- Residence at Texas State, wins their frst Grammy Award; School of Music named the #4 program in the country by gradreports.com based on median salary one year after graduation; Communication Studies hosts our 4th annual TEDx; Communication Design students place second by winning a school-record 65 awards in the Graphis New Talent national competition; Music hosts 32nd Hill Country Jazz Festival and the 17th Eddie Durham Jazz Celebration. Art and Design Professor Sean Justice, along with Education’s Lori Assaf, is awarded the College’s frst- ever National Science Foundation grant, an extension of his Families Learning Together computer coding project. COVID-19 forces cancellation of the Texas State International Piano Festival as well as all Study Abroad programs; despite the pandemic, Texas State has a record number of students enroll in summer classes. september 2019 Te College hosts its 5th CoSearch Research Startup Weekend, with an interdisciplinary team capturing 1st prize for a project to provide proactive stress management intervention to college students to improve race and diversity issues on campus; Teatre hosts 17th annual Black and Latino Playwrights Conference and honors Culture Clash; the Art Gallery hosts Philosophy of the Encounter by Tatiana Istomina; over 200 alumni return to join the Bobcat Marching Band to celebrate the Centennial of Bands. Cynthia Gonzales named a Regents’ Teacher by the Texas State University System. 30 . COLLEGE REPORT 2020 november 2019 Dance celebrates its 35th Opening Door Dance Teatre concert; SJMC’s Jenny Buschhorn wins American Advertising Federation Educator of the Year Award; Rebekah Fox gives her Dean’s Seminar presentation; Teatre presents a sold-out production of Little Women ; Judy Oskam represents Texas State in Beijing as part of a delegation of directors of Journalism and Mass Communication programs; Music hosts the acclaimed Attacca Quartet; alum Bobby Moreno is featured in American Teatre . j anuary 2020 Jennifer Datchuk is named a United States Artist 2020 Fellow (which includes a $50,000 prize); Erina Duganne co-curates an exhibit at Tufts University that is funded by a $60,000 NEA grant; Bobcat Promotions conducts a week-long professional development tour in New York City; Steven Hernandez and Monica Dyess win an American Association of Advertising Agencies’ Multi-Cultural Advertising Internship program award, while Amy Rivera and Yessica Rodriguez receive an American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Multi- Cultural Student award. march 2020 Jameson Dunn and Hector Montemayor Perez win an Award of Excellence from the Broadcast Educators Association; the Texas State Jazz Ensemble earns accolades for their performance at the Notre Dame Collegiate Jazz Festival. Four theatre students advance to the Kennedy Center as national fnalists in the Kennedy Center American College Teatre Festival; though the national festival is ultimately canceled, Caitlin Turnage and Lila Perlman are named national 2nd place fnishers in their respective playwriting categories; COVID-19 pandemic causes extended spring break and a move to remote learning for remainder of the semester. may 2020 COVID-19 pandemic causes cancellation of in-person graduation ceremonies; our National Advertising Student Competition team places 2nd nationally; theatre student Isaac Garza writes and stars in Pepito , one of three winners of HBO’s inaugural Latinx Short Film Competition; Communication Studies Professor Ann Burnette is named a Piper Professor—she is only the 24th Texas State faculty member to receive this prestigious honor; led by Claudia Roeschmann, the College of Fine Arts and Communication partners with the McCoy College of Business for our frst Virtual Entrepreneur Boot Camp. july 2020 A surge of COVID-19 cases inTexas forces the university to halt plans for face-to-face classes during summer II—instead virtually all classes are delivered remotely; continuing efects of COVID-19 result in budget cuts as well as contingency planning for multiple scenarios for the fall semester. Te College’s season of 199 performances is cut to 152; despite this cancellation of a quarter of the season, ticket sales still total higher than the year before the Performing Arts Center opened (2014).
