COLLEGE REPORT 2020 F i r s t gen / N e x t gen . c3 research center external and internal funding awarded Te Center for Communication, Collaboration, and Creativity, also known as C3, serves the research and creative needs of faculty in the College of Fine Arts and Communication. C3 aims to leverage external funding for interdisciplinary research and creative ideas to make a positive impact in the way people live, learn, and work. Te college’s C3 Research Center ofers support to enhance the entire continuum of faculty research and scholarly creative activities, from the initial spark of an idea to the delivery of a successful project. Overview: C3 aims to leverage external funding for interdisciplinary research and creative ideas to make a positive impact in the way people, live, learn, and work. INCREASING FUNDED RESEARCH In addition to helping faculty apply for traditional funding opportunities, fellowships and government contracts, C3 is on the forefront of innovative fundraising activities and helps faculty pursue funding from private sponsors like foundations and corporations. Texas State aims to increase restricted research expenditures as we strive to become eligible for National Research University Funding status. Since the inception of C3 in 2014, the number of submitted proposals and sponsored program expenditures for the College of Fine Arts and Communication has increased dramatically. C3 remains committed to supporting faculty in achieving their creative and scholarly goals by encouraging faculty to submit proposals for internal funding and building upon this foundation to submit for external funding. In the 2018-2019 fscal year, the College of Fine Arts and Communication will have nearly $300,000 in sponsored programs expenditures from foundations and state and federal funders. C3 TEAM: LISA WESTERBECK MATTHEW WINN Award Management Proposal Development 52 INTERNAL FUNDING AWARDED For the Research Enhancement Program (REP), the number of REPs awarded is based on the amount of funds available in the REP program per year and the number of proposals submitted by each college per year. In 2018, the College of Fine Arts and Communication submitted 21 proposals and 5 were awarded totaling $54,776. In 2019, the College submitted 30 proposals and 10 were awarded totaling $92,640 (2nd highest in the University). FUTURE RESEARCH Here is a glimpse at some of the fascinating future research and creative projects C3 is supporting: • Keith Winking (Music) and Hank Hehmsoth (Music) are applying for a National Endowment for the Arts “Our Town” grant this fall to support the Eddie Durham Celebration in the Spring of 2022. Te event celebrates Jazz legend and San Marcos’ own Eddie Durham through a concert that features some of his most famous music. • Hank Hehmsoth (Music) is planning to apply for a CLIR: Recording at Risk grant in January 2021. Te goal of this project is to preserve and digitize dozens of recordings from jazz music legends and renowned Jazz DJ and historian, Phil Schaap. • Cindy Royal (Journalism and Mass Communication) is planning to apply for a limited submission National Science Foundation Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) grant in the early fall if selected by the university. Te goal of the project is to better understand how technology and STEM skills can be efectively integrated into undergraduate liberal arts and fne arts courses to create a more diverse and prepared workforce. Overall, the C3 center supports a culture of scholarship, research, creative activity and collaboration among faculty in the College of Fine Arts and Communication and beyond. Sponsor: Pennsylvania State University. • Hank Hehmsoth – Berger-Berger-Carter Research Fellowship: Golden Era in Jazz: Te Works and Reminiscences of NEA Jazz Master Dan Morgenstern. Total Award: $1,000. Sponsor: Institute of Jazz Studies (IJS) at Rutgers University. • Sean Justice – Exploring Early Childhood Teachers’ Abilities to Identify Computational Tinking Precursors to Strengthen Computer Science in Classrooms. Total Award: $449,100. Sponsor: National Science Foundation. • Sean Justice – Families Learning Together. Total Award: $1,180. Sponsor: Te San Marcos Commission on Children and Youth. • Jason Kwak – 11th Annual Texas State International Piano Festival. Total Award: $3,500. Sponsor: San Marcos Arts Commission. • Eugene Lee – Black and Latino Playwrights Conference. Sponsors: Humanities Texas ($2,000, 2020), National Endowment for the Arts ($10,000, 2019-2020), National Endowment for the Humanities ($16,921 matching grant, 2016-2021). • Cindy Royal – Ph.Digital – Preparing Future Faculty to Lead Innovative Curriculum.
