pres idential excellence and faculty award winners The university’s Presidential Excellence Awards recognize and reward superior accomplishments as they encourage all faculty to continue to improve and advance their teaching, scholarly/creative activity, and service. Seven Presidential Awards are granted each year, with the college claiming two of them in 2021. The Regents’ Teacher Award is a new designation (2018) from the Texas State University System, with Dr. Ann Burnette being the college’s 3rd recipient. 202 1 AWARD WI NNERS SEAN JUSTICE Assistant Professor Art and Design PRES IDENT IAL EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR SCHOLARLY/CREATIVE Dr. Sean Justice , Assistant Professor, Art Education, teaches and writes about maker education, material inquiry pedagogy, and teacher education in the digital age. His book, Learning to Teach in the Digital Age: New Materialities and Maker Paradigms in Schools was published in 2016 by Peter Lang, Inc. He holds a doctorate in Art and Art Education from Columbia University, Teachers College, where he taught digital fabrication, physical computing, creative coding, and photography, to pre- and in-service teachers from across the curriculum. While at Teachers College, he designed and directed the Myers Media Art Studio, a center for exploratory art and technology research. As an artist he has exhibited photographs, videos and computer animations both nationally and internationally. 6 ■ C O L L E G E R E P O R T 2 0 2 1 MICHAEL DEVLIN Associate Professor Journalism and Mass Communication PRES IDENT IAL EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR TEACHING Mike Devlin is Assistant Professor of Advertising. He holds a Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Alabama, and an M.A. in Mass Communication and B.A. in Electronic Media Communications from Texas Tech University. Prior to earning his Ph.D., Mike worked as media designer and multimedia specialist in Austin. He is the author of over 10 peer-reviewed publications, 40 national and international conference proceedings, and several book chapters examining the intersection between sports communication and advertising. His research has been published in Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media , Communication and Sport , International Journal of Sport Management & Marketing , Journal of Sports Media , and International Journal of Sport Communication . ANN BURNETTE Professor Communication Studies REGENTS ’ TEACHER AWARD Dr. Ann Burnette teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in political communication, American public address, persuasion, rhetorical criticism, and public speaking. She also works with students from the Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center for the legally blind. She has received the Texas State University Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching. Her teaching has also been honored by the Southern States Communication Association and the Texas State Alumni Association. She publishes scholarship on presidential rhetoric, campaign persuasion, women in public address, and freedom of expression issues. She has shared her insights on political rhetoric on national news media such as The Washington Post and NBC News. The Texas Legislature and the Texas Commission on the Arts select an “Artist of the Year” in four categories. Jennifer Datchuk joins Craig Hella Johnson (Musician 2013) and Beverly Penn (3-D Artist 2017) as our 3rd recipient. Each year the Sun Belt Conference selects one person from each institution as their Faculty of the Year; Laurie Fluker is our first recipient. Distinguished Professor Emeritus is reserve for a select group of recent retires; Sheila Hargett is the College’s 15th recipient. 202 1 AWARD WI NNERS JENNIFER DATCHUK Assistant Professor Art and Design STATE OF TEXAS 3 -D VI SUAL ART I ST OF THE YEAR Jennifer Ling Datchuk holds an M.F.A. in Artisanry from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth and a B.F.A. in Crafts from Kent State University. She has received grants from the Artist Foundation of San Antonio, travel grant from Artpace, and the Linda Lighton International Artist Exchange Program. She was awarded a residency through the Blue Star Contemporary Art Museum to conduct her studio practice at the Künstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin, Germany and has participated in residencies at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China, Vermont Studio Center, European Ceramic Work Center in the Netherlands and Artpace in San Antonio. In 2017, she received the Emerging Voices award from the American Craft Council. She lives and maintains a studio practice in San Antonio. LAURIE FLUKER Associate Professor Journalism and Mass Communication SUN BELT FACULTY OF THE YEAR Dr. Laurie Fluker is an Associate Professor, President-elect of the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education, and has taught at Texas State University for 25 years. She annually serves as a national official for Honda All-Star Challenge university competition and also serves on the State Board of the Texas Association of Black Personnel in Higher Education. Fluker has been recognized with numerous awards and honors, such as the Everett Sweeney Award for Excellence in Teaching (2006) and the Mariel M. Muir Excellence in Mentoring Award (2006). She was the first African American to receive the Alumni Teaching Award, the first African American to be named Presidential Fellow, and the first African American to be named by students as Outstanding Professor in her college for six years. SHEILA HARGETT Professor Theatre and Dance DI ST INGUI SHED PROFESSOR EMER I T I Sheila Hargett has been head of Costume Design/Technology at Texas State University for the past 35 years. She has designed regionally for The Dallas Shakespeare Festival, Texas Playwrights Theatre Company, Zilker Theatrical Productions and more. She has received three AMOCCOAmerican College Theatre Awards for her work. Her designs have been seen in several theatrical exhibits such as Design Fest at the Texas Educational Theatre Association Conference; Design Southwest Showcase , several National USITT Expo exhibitions; the 2003 International Prague Quadrennial Exhibit and World Stage Design in Toronto. Her designs for The Next Amendment were chosen for the 2007 Prague Quadrennial . In 2006, Sheila won the Austin Critics Table Award for her costumes in The Rover . ■ 7
