Journalism major Ashley Garcia has been accepted into the internship program at KXAS-NBC 5 in Fort Worth, Texas. Journalism major Anna Herod won the Stuart Long Scholarship for Aspiring Journalists, the top scholarship presented by the Headliners Foundation of Texas. Current and former members of the KTSW 89.9 staff fared very well in the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Awards 2016. Here are the winners: Radio Documentary: 1st place - IPI - “Water Culture” - Taylor Zavala , Leighann Coleman , Carlos Marquez , Laura Aebi Radio Feature Story: 1st place - DaLyah Jones - “Deaf Student Section” Honorable Mention - Carlos Marquez - “March” Radio Public Affairs Program: 3rd place - IPI - “Gender” - Taylor Zavala , Matthew Hamill , Laura Aebi Radio Spot News: 2nd place - DaLyah Jones - “Flood Impact” Radio Sportscast: 1st place - Kyle Spencer , Jason Harri s - “Texas State Volleyball” Honorable Mention - Jason Harris , Kyle Spencer - “SMHS Rattler Football” Overall Excellence: 2nd place - Matthew Hamill - “2 p.m. Newscast - 11/5/15” The Texas State University team won 1st Place in District 10 of the American Advertising Federation National Student Advertising Competition. SJMC Advertising Sequence Coordinator Jenny Buschhorn and Marketing Assistant Professor Rick Wilson serve as co-advisors for this winning team. Department Accolades The School of Journalism & Mass Communication reached a new high in participation in this year’s Family Campaign, with 74 percent of faculty and staff donating. That beat last year’s previous best of 70 percent. Five University Star staff members were recognized in Fort Worth March 18 and March 19 as award winners during the annual Society of Professional Journalists Region 8 Mark of Excellence convention. Students receiving awards include Quixem Ramirez , Madison Teague , Brandon Sams , Monique Guerrero and Jon Wilcox . Meanwhile, The University Star staff for its submission of the updated website has also been recognized by the committee. All first place Region 8 winners automatically qualify for the national competition.
