She will use the $2,000 award to continue her research in the Czech Republic, where she will interview child survivors of the 1942 atrocity at Lidice, near Prague. Clark will also present a reading and discussion during annual public ceremonies commemorating the June 10, 1942, destruction of the village. Her feature story about Mustang Island was published on March 14 in Te Houston Chronicle , in print and online. [1] Members of the Higher Education Coordinating Board Journalism Field of Study Committee elected Kym Fox as co-chair representing 4-year institutions during its April meeting. [ 2] Te committee, made up of equal numbers of faculty representing 2-year and 4-year public colleges and universities, is charged with setting lower- division curriculum for undergraduate degree programs in journalism. Te Field of Study curriculum delineates the courses 4-year institutions must accept when students transfer from 2-year institutions in Texas. Dr. Kelly Kaufhold was invited to join a panel on the Future of Journalism March 26 at Winthrop University in South Carolina. Te panel was part of a year-long initiative on news literacy supported by SC Humanities, a foundation to support education in South Carolina. Kaufhold, who co-edited a book on the Future of News, was joined by a representative of the Newseum in Washington, D.C. and a couple of South Carolina news publishers. SCHOOL ACCOLADES Te Bachelor’s Degree Center has released a list of the “25 Best Bachelor’s in Media Communications Degree Programs for 2019” and Texas State is ranked 15th! Te University Star was a fnalist in four categories for the SPJ Region 8 Mark of Excellence Awards and won one. University Star EIC and journalism major Carrington Tatum will go on to compete at the national level. Te week-long program brought together experienced television and newspaper photojournalists, reporters and video journalists – anyone who tells stories with moving pictures, sound and words. [ 3] Tis year students came from as far away as Denmark and all over the United States. Te primary reason for holding the workshop at Texas State is the ability to involve students from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in workshop sessions with professional media students. Our students get to work side by side with some of America’s best journalists and photographers. Tis is a unique opportunity that few institutions can ofer. Tis year’s faculty included: Boyd Huppert, KARE TV in Minneapolis and host of the station’s weekly “Land of 10,000 Stories”; Joe Fryer, NBC News correspondent based in Los Angeles, reporting for NBC Nightly News, TODAY and MSNBC; Matt Pearl, Chief of Storytelling and Development for WXIA-TV in Atlanta; Chad Nelson, two-time National Press Photographer of the Year, and photographer at KARE TV in Minneapolis; Kristin Dickerson, anchor, special projects reporter, and solo video journalist at NBC 5 in Dallas-Fort Worth; Alicia Inns, Cedar Park Police Department Media and Communications Specialist; and Anne Herbst, Director of Visual Journalism at KUSA in Denver. Associate professor of practice David Nolan is the faculty coordinator for the workshop and is also a workshop instructor for the week. Student time at the workshop is divided between classroom sessions and producing stories. Students develop story ideas, research, report, shoot, edit and produce complete packages. Critiques and one-on-one sessions are also a major part of the workshop. Shooting, writing and editing are conducted under real world deadlines. As part of the week the School also brings high school students and their instructors from the Vidal M. Trevino School of Fine Arts and Communication in Laredo as part of the D.D. Hachar Visiting Hispanic Media Professionals Program. Te National Press Photographers Association is a 6,000 plus member organization dedicated to the advancement of photojournalism, its creation, editing and distribution in all news media. Teir members include still and television photographers, editors, students and representatives of businesses that serve the photojournalism industry. STUDENT ACCOLADES Twenty-eight SJMC students and faculty attended the International Symposium on Online Journalism at Te University of Texas April 12-13. At the conference, students were exposed to emerging topics that included podcasting and the future of community journalism.
