4 Advertising students who won 4th place in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition 5 Students asking the San Antonio Spurs broadcasters questions in a game day session at the AT&T Center 6 Te Randy Rogers Band with Journalism and Mass Communication Alum, Randy Rogers 14 | April & May | College News platform editor at Te New York Times , Millie Tran, Matt Tompson, editor-in-chief at the Center for Investigative Reporting and Tasneem Raja, co-founder and executive editor, Te Tyler Loop. Advertising students from SJMC won 4th place for District 10 in the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). [4] Teir campaign was well received, with one judge stating “Fantastic book, really impressed with the vast range of ideas. It’s very visually pleasing to read through and the ideas were brought to life.” NSAC is the largest and most prestigious advertising competition in the nation, and District 10 is one of the most competitive. Students from SJMC were: Kendall Becker , Jhazmine Billups , Larissa Faery , Kristofer Fajardo , Sallie Hildebrand , Lauren McDowell , Alyssa Nodorft , Elizabeth Oxford , Jessica Pruitt , Hannah Robinson , Nelson Smith , Ryan Unger , and Katheryn Willis . Also on the team were Morgan Mullen from Communication Design and Gabriela Grande , Elizabeth Hardy , Timothy Smith , and Samantha Varela from Marketing. San Antonio Spurs broadcasters Bill Land, Bill Schoening and Mike Kickirillo answer students’ questions in a game day session at the AT&T Center. Te students are from Larry Carlson’s MC 4357 Sports as News class. [5 ] ALUMNI ACCOLADES Alison Bryce (B.S., 2017) is in her frst year of graduate study at the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Te University of Kansas, where she is enrolled in the online master’s degree program in digital content strategy. Bryce is an intern for EASTside Magazine in Austin and works part-time at Bed Bath and Beyond in San Marcos. After graduating from Texas State, Bryce worked for a year at Facebook. Dionicio “Don” Flores has been appointed to the Texas State University System Board of Regents. Randy Rogers , part of Te Randy Rogers Band, had a CD release party for their new album “Hellbent” at Cheatham St. Warehouse on April 27. C3 The Center for Communication, Collaboration & Creativit y (C3) BLACKANDLATINOPLAYWRIGHTSCONFERENCE Te Black and Latino Playwrights Conference (BLPC), led by Artistic Director Eugene Lee, was awarded a $10,000 NEA Art Works grant. Te grant will support the 17th Annual BLPC that will take place from Monday September 2 to Sunday September 8. Te conference will feature open rehearsals of plays written by up and coming Black and Latino playwrights, showcase the work of other Black and Latino Playwrights, and honor a distinguished artist/ group. Tis year, the BLPC will honor Culture Clash, a renowned troupe of Latino writers and comedians. All students, staf, and faculty are welcome to attend the open rehearsals and the tribute to Culture Clash! COSEARCH TEXAS STATE WEEKEND CoSearch Weekend is a two-day intensive retreat where multi-disciplinary teams of researchers and artists will collaborate to develop research plans that will be supported by C3 and carried out over the upcoming academic year. Te goal is to break down academic silos and bridge research and creative activity to produce cutting-edge and possible grant-funded projects that unite researchers and artists from the University.
