4 Communication Design Students working along-side students from McCoy School of Business and Computer Science 5 Te team formed to work directly with the Hays County Food Bank received a $1,000 prize and $5,000 grant from Microsoft 6 Interdisciplinary team members working to tackle food insecurity in the San Marcos area 4 | April & May | College News Gender Studies. Molly is organizing and moderating a conversation series about the participatory and pedagogical practices of the Highlander Research and Education Center in partnership with Sewanee: Te University of the South. Tis public program will take place at the original site of the Highlander Folk School in Monteagle, Tennessee on May 18. Omari Souza recently presented at the Design Incubation Colloquia in Boston this past March. Omari had one of his abstracts accepted for Message 4: Graphic Design Research Journal and another of his abstracts accepted for presentation at the Design and Principal conference next March at Pratt University. Omari has been invited by the Design and Culture Journal to attend the UCDA conference in May as a reviewer, as well as separately invited to the Hue Design Summit as a reviewer. Omari will have some of his photography and design work exhibited throughout the Pittsburgh Public Library System. Gina McDaniel Tarver will be presenting a paper titled “Windows onto (En)gendered and Contested Spatial Relations: Te Environments of Colombian Artists Ana Mercedes Hoyos and Alicia Barney” at the 2019 Latin American Studies Association Congress in Boston on May 26th. Gina will give a talk titled “Words that Matter and Materials that Speak in Colombian Art” at the Blanton Museum of Art on Wednesday, May 1st. Tarver was invited to give this talk in conjunction with the exhibition Words/Matter: Latin American Art and Language at the Blanton , which is on display through May 26th. STUDENT ACCOLADES Tina Coyne , B.F.A. 2017 has been accepted into the Masters program of Arts in Human Sexuality Studies from San Francisco State University. Te Open Data team at the City of Austin invited MFA Communication Design Students, Ti Nguyen , Nathaniel Haefner , Stephanie Long and Flor Barajas along with professor MiHyun Kim to present their data visualization projects during their monthly meeting at the Austin City Hall on May 17th. Art History major Austen Villacis presented his art history thesis, titled “Advertisements Contrary to Underlying Perspectives: DIVA TV, Culture Jamming, and the Collective ‘Party’ against AIDS,” at the 13th Annual Undergraduate Research Conference (Texas State University, Honors College). His thesis is based on original research he conducted in New York City in December 2018, supported by an Undergraduate Research Grant. B.F.A. and M.F.A. Communication Design Students worked along-side students from McCoy School of Business and Computer Science to tackle food insecurity in the San Marcos area. Tis interdisciplinary team was formed to work directly with the Hays County Food Bank to study their operations and develop a software solution to help streamline their processes, in order to help them serve more customers. Over the past 8 months, the team has presented at SXSW Innovation Lab, received a $1,000 prize and $5,000 grant from Microsoft (which included mentorship from Microsoft employees), and was accepted to compete at the 3-Day Startup-Deep Dive competition. Tey will be working over the summer to implement the software at the Food Bank and test its efectiveness. Team members included: Joshua Avery (Business), Cedrik Chavez (Business), Samantha Hollensbe (Computer Science), Stephanie Long (MFA ComDes), Jose Meza (Business), Marissa Servantez (BFA ComDes), McKenna Strain (BFA ComDes), Phillip Tran (Computer Science), and Zachary Turov (Business). Faculty mentors included Mr. Grayson Lawrence from Art & Design, Dr. Janet Hale from McCoy School of Business, and Dr. Ted Lehr from Computer Science. [4 - 6] ALUMNI ACCOLADES Tina Coyne , B.F.A. 2017 has been accepted into the Masters program of Arts in Human Sexuality Studies from San Francisco State University. Clay McClure , B.F.A. in Sculpture, 2007 has been granted tenure at School of Professional Studies, Schreiner University, Kerrville, Texas. He runs their design program and digital facility. Art History alumnus Anthony Romero has been named a Fellow at Harvard University’s Radclife Institute for Advanced Study for 2019-2020. Emily Potts , (B.F.A. Spring 2019) was accepted to University of North Texas.
