Carlson was contacted by Brandon Boyd, the coordinator of the Foundation's educational programs aimed at training sports media professionals and sports media students in better understanding of concussion protocol and reporting on injuries even as they happen during live broadcasts. Te Concussion Reporting Workshop recently visited two of the nation's top journalism programs at Syracuse University and the University of Missouri. Dr. Judy Oskam’s podcast, Stories of Change and Creativity , hit 1,000 podcast downloads in April, with listeners from 22 countries. Te project, in its frst season, features interviews with professionals who inspire, educate and motivate. Oskam is working on a mini-series featuring interviews about COVID-19 and university life. In a recent episode, Digital Media Innovation graduating senior Anne Cox shares her perspective. Dr. Cindy Royal took to the Internet to interview SJMC alumni about the efects of the COVID-19 pandemic on their work and personal lives. Alumni working at Texas Tribune , Te New York Times , Gannett, GoDaddy, Austin digital marketing agency Mighty Citizen and more described their work-from-home strategies and ways in which their companies were adapting, as well as provided advice for graduating students. [ 1 ] STUDENT ACCOLADES Jaden Edison , the incoming editor-in-chief of Te University Star , was one of two students from across the state selected to receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Texas Auto Writers Association. Te Texas State University 2020 National Advertising Student Competition (NSAC) Team won First Place in the American Advertising Federation (AAF) District 10 Competition (consisting of schools from Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas). [ 2 ] Tey were tasked with a notably complex B2B case from a nationally recognized client, as well as complex remote working conditions due to the pandemic, and persevered with integrity, passion, and grace. Tis was truly a team efort as it consisted of SJMC Advertising, Marketing, and Communication Design students. After districts, they advanced out of semi-fnals to become one of eight teams advancing to the American Advertising Federation (AAF) national competition for the frst time since 2010. Te national competition will take place virtually later this month and the winner will be announced June 8. Students in Professor Cindy Royal’s Mobile Media Development Course designed apps for self-care, quizzes, games, task management, astrology, and more. SCHOOL ACCOLADES Te University Star was designated a frst-place winner for the Region 8 Society of Professional Journalists’ Mark of Excellence Awards at the end of March for editorial writing and for best use of multimedia. First-place winners then competed at the national level among other regional MOE winners from the 12 SPJ regions. National Mark of Excellence award judges could select one national winner and up to two national fnalists in each category. Te University Star won 17 awards this year for previously published work during the 2019 calendar year. Te Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) is the oldest collegiate media organization in the country. It consists of 77 public and private two-year colleges and four- year universities in Texas that teach journalism or have existing or planned student publications. Te annual awards honor excellence in student media. Texas State competes in Division I, which includes A&M-College Station, Abilene Christian, Baylor, TCU, Texas Tech, University of Houston, University of North Texas, UT- Arlington, UT-Austin, UT-Dallas, UT-El Paso and UT- Rio Grande Valley. Te University Star is one of 10 newsrooms to be selected for the Poynter College Media Project. Tis unique year-long program of campus workshop visits and online coaching can help student media programs realize their potential to play a critical role as community facilitators in the marketplace of ideas. Student newsrooms selected for this challenge provide active feedback to ensure the power and reach of the program on their campuses. Te Media Innovation Lab launched a new online research journal, the MILab Journal: Adventures in Media Innovation on April 21. Te journal will publish articles that deal with media innovation relevant to academics and media professionals. Te frst article, titled "Lessons from PhDigital Bootcamp: Preparing Future Faculty to Lead Emerging Media Curriculum " shares refections of PhDigital Bootcamp Fellows from the past two years of the program and ofers insight into the future of doctoral education in media programs. [ 3] #PRESS4EDUCATION Kym Fox co-produced a video series on journalism basics as part of a collaboration between the Society of Professional Journalists and the Journalism Education Association. Te 10-part series was created in an efort to provide quality instruction materials for high school journalism teachers who suddenly found themselves teaching online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It is part of the #Press4Education program, a national SPJ initiative that connects professional journalists with high school students. Fox is a co-chair of #Press4education.
