COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION APRIL AND MAY ISSUE | SPRING 2020 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING Te stress, uncertainty, and health ART AND DESIGN [PG. 2] COMMUNICATION STUDIES [PG. 4] concerns of the last two months have taught us all many life lessons, and it has also shown that it’s going to take more than a global pandemic to keep down our extraordinary students! Communication Design students won twelve Addy Awards in a San Antonio competition (p.3). Our National Advertising Student Competition won its district, and then made it through the semi-fnals to stand as one of eight schools going to the national fnals (p.11). Te University Star won 17 awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, more than any other school in the state (p.11). Seven students earned a Texas Education Association Collegiate Music Educators Award (p.13), while Sa Ra Park became the college’s frst ever recipient of a Philanthropic Educational Organization International Peace Scholarship (p.13). Isaac Garza wrote and starred in Pepito , one of three winners of HBO’s inaugural Latinx Short Film Competition (p.19). Led by Claudia Roeschmann, the College of Fine arts and Communication partnered with the McCoy College of Business for our frst Virtual Entrepreneur Boot Camp (p.3). In Communication Studies, Ann Burnette was named a Piper Professor; she is only the 24th Texas State faculty member to receive this prestigious honor (p.4). In Music, Ames Asbell and Cynthia Gonzalez were named to national leadership positions (p.12). Zoom was used to connect with local elementary dance students (p.8), interview top national and international dancers (p.9), share results of the Concussion Legacy Foundation (p.9), interview alumni regarding the efects of the COVID-19 pandemic (p.10), and host master classes with an Emmy winner and Broadway choreographers (p.15).
