ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art 2 | April & May 2024 | College News FACULTY ACCOLADES To commemorate the Collections Committee exhibition, OUT of the Jewelry Box , Sulo Bee participated in a panel discussion moderated by fellow Texas State alum, Rebekah Frank , at the Museum of Arts and Design. Sulo Bee will also be gearing up for a solo exhibition titled Makeshift Gardens at Brooklyn Metalworks in Brooklyn, NY, which will feature a 2-day workshop complementing the opening reception. The exhibition is set to open on July 12th. Sulo Bee will unveil new work for Objects USA , a triennial hosted by R&Company in New York. Andrew Chen brought Art History students and faculty to two seminars at the Blanton Museum of Art on Early Modern Drawings and Seventeenth-Century French Paintings, held on April 12th and April 15th, respectively. Participants had the opportunity to study artworks from the museum’s collections with invited world experts in these fields. [1] Andrew Chen presented a paper titled “Reallegorizing Dante: Politics of the Underground Imaginary in Late Sixteenth-Century Florence” at a session on the Early Modern Underground at the Annual Meeting of the Renaissance Society of America in Chicago, Illinois. He was a co-organizer of three sessions on the broader topic. Shannon Faseler had her work featured in Hillviews Magazine ’s spring 2024 issue. Her compelling work titled "Glacier Series," eloquently navigates the pressing issue of climate change's profound impact on polar environments. With meticulous research and profound insights, she illuminates the alarming rate at which these icy landscapes are disappearing, compelling us all to confront the urgent challenges of our changing planet. [2] Andrew Chen took students to the Blanton Museum of Art Shannon Faseler in her home studio Kevin Jenkins presented at the National Art Education Association 1 2 3 Shannon Faseler will be attending The Arctic Circle Residency in August. The Arctic Circle Residency offers artists a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the stunning landscapes of the Arctic region, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and exploration. Through expeditions aboard a sailing vessel, artists engage with the Arctic environment, drawing inspiration and addressing pressing environmental issues through their creative practice. Nature Nurture/Nurture Nature, works by Elizabeth Chiles, Yevgenia Davidoff, Sarah Hirneisen , Yuliya Lanina and Lana Waldrep Appl (Texas State Galleries, FLEX) was featured in the San Marcos Daily Record . Kevin Jenkins presented "From Dropout to Doctor: A Personal Journey of Facing Self-Doubt and Finding Success" and "You Belong Here: LGBTQ+ Academics Making Space for Themselves – An Open Discussion" at the Sul Ross State University College of Graduate Studies on March 5. Kevin Jenkins presented "Everybody Belongs: Trans and Nonbinary Allyship" in Minneapolis at the National Art Education Association (NAEA) annual convention. [3] Brian Johnson 's print "No Land in Sight (Sunset)" was selected for the 37th Annual McNeese National Works on Paper Exhibition . 70 works from 696 entries were selected by juror Graham Boettcher, Director and CEO of the Birmingham Museum of Art. The exhibition will be on view from mid-March to May 1st in the Grand Gallery at McNeese State University in Lake Charles, LA. Brian Johnson , an esteemed artist, had his print titled “Invisible Bonds (Deep Water)” chosen for the prestigious 44th National Print Exhibition . This exhibition was held at the renowned Artlink Contemporary Gallery, located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The selection process was overseen by Sachi Yanari- Rizzo, who holds the position of Curator of Prints and Drawings at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art. The exhibition was open to the public from March 21st to April 21st, showcasing a variety of exceptional works. On March 8, Adetty Pérez de Miles had the honor of delivering the keynote address at the 6th Annual Naturalization Ceremony, which took place at Texas State University. The Honorable Mark Lane, a United States District Judge, administered the Oath of Citizenship to over 250 individuals hailing from various parts of the world, marking their transition to new citizens of the United States. During her speech, Pérez de Miles shared insights from her personal journey to becoming a U.S. citizen. She emphasized three key aspects: the courage required to speak truth to power, the compassion necessary to recognize our shared humanity, and the importance of forging meaningful connections rooted in mutual responsibility toward one another. In April 2024, Adetty Pérez de Miles presented a thought-provoking topic titled “Art Education in Anti- Woke Times: Where Are We Now?” at the National Art Education (NAEA) annual convention held in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This research was part of the Council for Policy Studies in Art Education panel, which was chaired by Dr. Kimberly Powell from Penn State University. The presentation aimed to explore the current state of art education in a changing societal landscape. Furthermore, Pérez de Miles , in collaboration with Bravo Moix, facilitated a fiber-arts workshop for art educators across Texas. This workshop was part of the 2024 National Visual Arts Scholastic Events (VASE), providing an opportunity for educators to enhance their skills and knowledge in the field of fiber arts. Adetty Pérez de Miles presented a keynote address titled "Epistemic Disobedience: Decolonial Actions in Socially Engaged Art and Art Education" at the 19th Graduate Research in Art Education (GRAE) conference at Penn State University. Additionally, she served as a respondent for Ph.D. students from Penn State, Ohio State, and Teachers College, offering her expertise on their dissertation research presentations.
