Kimberly Felan and Anthony Gallardo presented, “Children’s desires and perceptions of social support from divorced parents and its efects of self-esteem and relationship satisfaction” to the Central States Communication Association Conference in Milwaukee. Lucas Hackenburg presented, “Advocating for free speech in pro-life organizations: An analysis of National Institute of Family and Life Advocates v. Becerra” to the Southern States Communication Association Conference. Undergraduate student Katy Head was accepted to the Penn State Graduate Education Symposium to be held this summer in State College, PA. Sierra Kane presented, “Can words kill? Lauren Lee and Logan Carpenter wrote a blog post as HASTAC Scholars expanding upon the Communication Week panel, “A Chance to be Heard” about stigma and identity. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Bret Barron (B.A., 2010) works for TRUECar as a training manager. He has been honored with the Boom! Award and the President’s Club award in the past two years. Tese awards are given to the top 2% of the company. Katterli Brinkman Becker (M.A., 2016) is a Coach of Excellence manager with TELUS International. Her new role sees her conducting needs assessments and restructuring their coaching philosophy and training. Connor Branach (B.A., 2015) is the co-founder and CEO of Compass Outdoors, an outdoor hiking equipment company. Gina Bludau (B.A., 2013) is a human resources Generalist II with DeTar Healthcare System. Kelly Clancy (B.A., 2002 & M.A., 2004) is an assistant professor of political science at Nebraska Wesleyan University. She has co-authored two papers with her brother Ben Clancy , who is also a 2016 M.A. alum. Pamela Farley (B.A., 2012) is an ASL instructor and board member with the Christian Academy for the Deaf. She is also a manager at “Crepe Crazy,” a deaf- owned, deaf stafed, all ASL restaurant with 2 locations in the Austin area. Joe Hofer (B.A., 2013) is an attorney and managing partner with Schulman, Lopez, Hofer & Adelstein, LLP. He was recognized as a Texas Super Lawyer Rising Star consecutively for 2015 and 2016 by Super Lawyers. Maddie Rich (B.A., 2015) is a senior marketing and communications representative with Memorial Hermann. Talan Tyminski (M.A., 2016) is a research analyst with Strategic Partnerships, Inc., a nationally-focused business development and procurement consulting frm. Adam VanDeventer (B.A., 2016) is the investor sales and services director for the Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce. Jordan Wagner (M.A., 2013) is a graduate teaching associate at Ohio University. Goyland Williams (M.A, 2016) is a faculty associate and assistant director of forensics at Seton Hall University. He is also an adjunct lecturer for the Department of Africana Studies at Seton Hall. His research on Twitter Activism and Big Data, equity and gendered discrimination has been featured at the SXSW Interactive Lab in 2017, Te National Communication Association, and the 2018 Texas State Comm Week. He was recently accepted into the Ph.D. program at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. Kirsten Wooten (M.A., 2007) is a consultant focusing on organizational change management with Sense Corp where she helps clients through major technology implementation, delivers trainings, conducts discovery interviews, and creates and manages change and communication plans. DEPARTMENT ACCOLADES Te Texas State University Department of Communication Studies presented a public lecture series on author C. S. Lewis featuring three prominent Lewis scholars who approach Lewis as communicator. All three lectures were free and open to the public. Dr. Michael Ward, internationally recognized scholar from Oxford University, presented “C. S. Lewis: Reason and Imagination.” Dr. Ward is the author and editor of numerous books including Planet Narnia and Te Cambridge Companion to C. S. Lewis . Andrew Lazo, a prominent Lewis scholar and author and editor of several Lewis articles and books, including a recently published early draft of Lewis’s autobiography, presented, “C. S. Lewis and the Myth of Love.” Dr. Steven A. Beebe , Regents’ and University Distinguished Professor from Texas State, presented “C. S. Lewis: Professor of Communication.” Dr. Beebe has written several articles about Lewis and teaches a course at Oxford University about Lewis and communication. #DEANSSEMINAR Steven A. Beebe recieved the College’s frst Dean’s Seminar Distinguished Achievement Award. His presentation centered on the argument that author C. S. Lewis should be rebranded as a professor of communication, emphasizing Lewis’s contributions to both communication theory and practice. Beebe made international headlines when he discovered a manuscript written by C. S. Lewis that was the partial opening chapter of a book that was to be co-authored with J. R. R. Tolkien called Language and Human Nature . In 2016, also at the Bodleian Library at Oxford, Beebe discovered an unknown poem by Lewis. Beebe is also the author and co-author of twelve books (with editions totaling more than 75 books) that have been used at hundreds of colleges and universities (including international, Canadian, Russian and Chinese editions) by several million students throughout the world.
