1 SJMC students at Edelman Public Relations and McGarrah-Jessee Advertising in Austin 2 Te National Press Photographers Association at their annual Advanced Storytelling Workshop 3 SJMC students winning 3rd place for District 10 in the American Advertising Federation’s National Student Advertising Competition 12 | April & May | College News JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Harry Bowers took students in the Mass Communication Learning Community for career development activities in Austin on March 23. Students were able to interact with and ask questions of account executives, account managers, media planners, account planners, copywriters, art directors, young professionals and hiring managers. Students had the chance to visit Edelman Public Relations and McGarrah-Jessee Advertising in Austin. [1] Larry Carlson wrote a piece on legendary Texas Longhorn basketball coach Abe Lemons and one of his championship teams for the CBS Sports site, Longhorns 24/7. Carlson covered the 1978 National Invitation Champion Longhorns as KVET Radio Sports Director in Austin. Lemons was known as the most quotable coach in sports during his six-year stay at UT and Carlson possesses the last known tape of a verbal blowout that Lemons launched against Arkansas coach Eddie Sutton after the two engaged in a shoving match and wild swings at each other at halftime of a Texas- Arkansas game. Carlson wrote three football articles and columns for Longhorns 24/7 last season. Elizabeth Clark , attended the American Copy Editors Society annual conference in April in Chicago and helped raise over $2,000 for scholarships by participating in the ACES Education Fund annual spelling bee. While in Chicago she also conducted research for her WWII project about Lidice, Czechoslovakia, at the Newberry Library and Regenstein Library, University of Chicago. In March she narrated a PowerPoint about media law for the members’ blog of GWA: Te Association for Garden Communicators. Clark serves on GWA’s education and communication committees. Both ACES and GWA are U.S.-based international organizations. Dr. Michael Devlin has been named the winner of the Early Career Teaching Excellence Award by Te Advertising Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Te Early Career Teaching Excellence Award is designed to reward excellence in undergraduate teaching displayed over a sustained period of time. Te award recognizes subject mastery, classroom management, creation of a positive learning environment, and dedication to teaching. Dr. Devlin will receive a $500 award and be recognized at the Advertising Division business meeting at the 2018 AEJMC annual conference in Washington D.C. Te South Dakota State University Department of Journalism and Mass Communication honored graduates during its annual awards banquet on April 18. Michel M. Haigh , professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, graduated from SDSU with degrees in agricultural communication and communication studies in 1999. She earned a master’s degree from Texas Tech before working as a writer/ editor for the Oklahoma State University Division of Ag Sciences’ Cooperative Extension Service. She earned a doctorate in communication studies from the University of Oklahoma. Haigh was a member of the faculty at Penn State from 2006-2017. She joined the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Texas State in July of 2017 as a professor and graduate program advisor. She oversees curriculum, assessment, and advises students. She has published more than 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals, and authored/co-authored more than 45 peer-reviewed conference papers, eight of them have been recognized with the Top Paper award. Her research and teaching record earned her early tenure and promotion at Penn State. Haigh was recognized as a Plank Fellow by Te Plank Center for Leadership in Public Relations at Te University of Alabama; was named to NerdScholar’s “40 under 40” list of “professors who inspire;” and awarded the Excellence in Teaching Award from the Penn State College of Communications Alumni Society Board. Dr. Vanessa de Macedo Higgins Joyce and Knight Center for Journalism in the America’s research fellows will have their study “Innovation and Sustainability: A Relationship Examined Among Latin American Entrepreneurial News Organizations” published in June by the Chilean journal Cuadernos Info . Te National Press Photographers Association once again had its annual Advanced Storytelling Workshop which was organized by David Nolan . [2] Videographers from TV stations throughout the United States and even foreign countries learned how to sharpen their video storytelling skills. Some of the workshop participants visited Ray Niekamp’s TV News class, where Joe Fryer of NBC News and Ted Land of KING5 Seattle critiqued their stories. Olga Mayoral Wilson , APR, Fellow PRSA, received the 2018 CoquiSA Award presented by the Puerto Rican Heritage Society in San Antonio for her involvement and initiatives pro education, culture and community of Puerto Ricans and Hispanics in the area. PRHS is a non proft 501 (c)3 organization whose mission started 35 years ago. STUDENT ACCOLADES Advertising students from SJMC won 3rd place for District 10 in the American Advertising Federation’s (AAF) National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC). [3] Tis project required students to research a brand and its target audience, develop a comprehensive strategic and creative advertising campaign, and then present to a panel of judges from the advertising industry. Teir campaign was well received, with one industry judge stating, “this was one of the best presentations I’ve ever seen.” NSAC is the largest and most prestigious advertising competition in the nation, and District 10 is one of the most competitive. Students from SJMC were: Molly Armstrong , Morgan Burrell , Marisa Campbell , Kimberly Clay , Collin Duggar , Chris Granja , Jarred Johnson , Nadia Johnson , Mason Parrott , Andrew Peters , Zach Reed , Laura Roach , Alicia Rosenwald , and Amani Seay . Teir faculty advisors were Dr. Clay Craig and Dr. Mike Devlin . Te D. D. Hachar Program sponsored the participation of nine students from Laredo’s Vidal M. Trevino School of Communications and Fine Arts at the Annual NPPA Digital Storytelling Workshop held at the LBJSC and overall campus. Led by instructors Mark Webber and Jamin Teran the students work hand-in-hand with international College of Fine Arts and Communication | 13
