Adah Toland Jones and Vanguel Tangarvov 12 | April & May | College News MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES Dr. Ames Asbell , Associate Professor of Viola, [ 1 ] was a featured artist during the 5th International Viola Forum, hosted by the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznan, Poland, from April 10th-14th. Te forum was held in a virtual format this year due to the pandemic; Dr. Asbell presented a solo viola recital “Neo- Baroque Solo Viola Suites by Female Composers” and a presentation “Tango Performance Techniques and Repertoire for Viola” recorded specially for the event, as well as live masterclasses via Zoom. Dr. Asbell is the president-elect of the American Viola Society. On March 26th, Dr. Asbell was a featured artist at the University of Southern Mississippi Viola Festival, where she presented a masterclass on works of Hindemith and Brahms. She also presented a masterclass for the University of Southern Mississippi Suzuki Stings program in April. Ames Asbell (viola), Ian Davidson (oboe), Karla Hamelin (‘cello) and Lynn Ledbetter (violin) presented masterclasses to students at the Universidad Autonoma de Coahuila (Saltillo, Mexico) and the Universidad Autonoma de Nuevo Leon (Monterrey) during the week of March 22-25, with a fnal presentation by Dr. Hamelin and Dr. Ledbetter about Texas State music degree programs on March 26. Tese masterclasses represent a seven-year partnership between the music schools in Monterrey/Saltillo and Texas State. Dean John Fleming invited Associate Professor Hank Hehmsoth to present at the UT Austin OLLI Osher Lifelong Learning Institute on April 29. Te webinar series was entitled: “Inspired by Art: Traditional and Non-traditional Uses of Art to Impact Society” and Hehmsoth lectured on “Creativity, Where Does It Come From?” Dr. Jose Garza, Jr. , Lecturer, had his article “Transcending Time (Feels): Rif Types, Timekeeping Cymbals, and Time Feels in Contemporary Metal Music” published in Music Teory Online Volume 27 Number 1, March 2021. Music Teory Online is a peer-reviewed journal of the Society for Music Teory, a prominent theory organization at the national level. Dr. Cynthia I. Gonzales delivered two invited presentations on April 24th at the inaugural SmartMusic Connect virtual event. She modeled how to teach aural skills using “Te Listen-Sing Method, Vol. 1,” Gonzales’ own collection of aural skills exercises published in SmartMusic. Both presentations are now available via YouTube under “Listen-Sing: Aural Skills for K-12” [ 2 ] and “Listen-Sing: Aural Skills for Higher Education. ” Senior Lecturer Richard Hall was a featured performer on the Austin Ableton SXSWMusic Showcase sponsored by Ableton Live Music Software on March 20th. Te virtual performance featured around a dozen national and international performers/artists from Los Angeles, Denver, Salt Lake City, Las Vegas, Brooklyn, Chicago, Austin, and Copenhagen. A new arrangement of Trio, op. 119 by Friedrich Kuhlau, originally composed for two futes and piano, is now available for fute, clarinet (A/Bb), and piano through ALRY Publications. Tis arrangement was crafted by Dr. Adah Toland Jones , Professor of Flute and Dr. Vanguel Tangarov , Associate Professor of Clarinet. Tis arrangement won an Honorable Mention for Newly Published Music by the National Flute Association. [ 3] Dr. Lynn Ledbetter presented two clinics at the American String Teachers Association (ASTA) Virtual Conference on March 5th. Te frst was “Building a Portfolio for Future String Educators and Performers.” Te second was a panel discussion entitled “Diversifcation of Repertoire in the Private Studio and Working with Adult Learners” led by Dr. Ledbetter in her role as Chair of the ASTA Private Studio Committee. PROFESSOR OF THE YEAR AWARD Dr. Kevin Mooney , Senior Lecturer of Musicology, received the John R. Hood Honors Professor of the Year Award at the Honors College Awards Ceremony on May 4th. Tis award is chosen by Honors students and awarded to a professor who has taught an Honors class in the fall or spring semester. As we aim to provide a laboratory for innovative teaching that leads to undergraduate research and transformations in students’ perceptions, this award is made to professors who have made an impact on honors students. Dr. Mooney is also a three-time recipient of the “Favorite Professor” award of the Alfred H. Nolle Chapter of the Alpha Chi National College Honor Society (2012, 2014, and 2015).
