Qualia Contemporary Art is pleased to present Site , a solo exhibition by painter Tommy Fitzpatrick , featuring new works in his 25-year exploration of structural space and color. [ 1 ] Te artist takes architecture as his inspiration, constructing painted forms that straddle sculpture, still life, and abstraction. His work demonstrates how our perception of the built environment can evolve over time. Tommy’s show in California was recently featured in Wallpaper Magazine . Jefrey Lieber's essay, "Mandarin or Maverick? Reassessing the Architecture of Gordon Bunshaft," was published in the Winter 2021 issue of Architectural Histories , the journal of the European Architectural History Network. Jefrey's review of Making Houston Modern: Te Life and Architecture of Howard Barnstone (University of Texas Press, 2020), appears in the May/ June 2021 issue of Texas Architect , the magazine of the Texas Society of Architects. Jennifer Ling Datchuk was included in a feature titled "Crafting a Culture of Care" for the American Craft magazine. Te interviews centered around those who make craft, honor it, and live with it can help show us the way forward - because a life in craft is imbued with care. In this article, craftspeople ofer their insights about craft and care, providing a guide for how we can help heal ourselves, tend to one another, and create a culture of care. Jennifer participated in a panel discussion for the National Ceramic Educators Council on the Arts (NCECA) virtual conference titled Strategies for Bridging Identity and Politics in Clay Communities. She served as an application juror alongside Chris Sun Kim and Accra Shepp to select participants and fellowship awardees for the Winter Residency Program at Anderson Ranch Art Center. She was also a virtual visiting artist at Sam Houston State University, as well as Alfred University, University of Southern California, and Yale during the month of April. Jennifer and ceramic artist Beth Lo conducted an exhibition walk through and talk for their exhibition A Year of Uncertainty at Lucy Lacoste Gallery. [ 2 ] On February 13, Gina McDaniel Tarver presented the paper “Testing the Waters: Alicia Barney’s Río Cauca, 1981–82” via Zoom as part of the Ecofeminism’s panels sponsored by Te Feminist Art Project (TFAP) at the College Art Association Annual Conference. Mark Menjivar led a virtual workshop based on his project Migration Stories at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, VA. Mark also led a virtual discussion with author Maurice Chammah on Capital Punishment in Texas hosted by the Texas After Violence Project in conjunction with his exhibitions at Sala Diaz and Blue Star Contemporary, both in San Antonio. He has a pop-up exhibition at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center in San Antonio. Mark also gave a virtual artist talk for the 2021 Portland State University Art+ Social Practice MFA Program Virtual World Tour. Drs. Adetty Pérez de Miles (she/her) and Kevin Jenkins (he/him) of the art education program presented "A Long Time Ago in a Gender Far, Far Away: Trans Resistance" at the Digital Frontiers virtual conference Realizing Resistance Episode II: Uncharted Galaxies, an Interdisciplinary Conference on the Star Wars Universe from May 4-7. Claudia Roeschmann has led a team of volunteers (including the Greater San Marcos Partnership, City of San Marcos, the San Marcos Library, Splash Coworking and Tribez Events) to launch the 1 Million Cups Greater San Marcos community since last fall. Molly Sherman’s creative book Shaped by the People was selected for distribution at Inga Books in Chicago, and Draw Down Books in Guilford, Connecticut. Molly’s creative publication series A Bibliography for Reimagining Borders was selected for distribution at Printed Matter in New York. An editorial piece that Genaro Solis Rivero directed, designed, and illustrated for Legacy79 got adjudicated. Legacy79 Miner’s Journal got a Silver Addy in AAF— San Antonio and in AAF—Tenth District. Barry Stone’s show, Drift was reviewed in the April Print Edition of Artforum pp.136-137. Also, a picture from Drift , “Floating on the Grass, Bailey Island, Maine,” was published in the May issue of Harper’s Magazine illustrating an excerpt entitled “Overtaking” of Rachel Cusk’s new novel. STUDENT ACCOLADES Communication Design student Samantha Chapman recently won "Best of Show" for her work My Friends and Me, Te ABC’s and "Special Judges’ Award" for her work Smart Citrus in the San Antonio Addy Awards. [ 3] Photo Tesis student Adriana Espinosa had her zine, Lavender Prose, featured as part of the NY Printed Matter Book Fair with Exile Books from Miami. Photo Tesis student Chantal Lesley is included in the Houston Center for Photography’s Contemporary Practice exhibition. She is also included in the Rising Eyes of Texas 2021 exhibition at the Rockport Center for the Arts. #FACULTYSPOTLIGHT Alpha Chi National Honor Society has nominated Estéban Hinojosa as one of the Alpha Chi Favorite Professors for 2021.
