Ngondo and Jennifer Scharlach at the Texas Association for Mexican American Chambers of Commerce 2 Journalism senior Timia Cobb 3 Texas State NSAC team wins frst at District 10 advertising competition 14 | April & May | College News JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Nandini Bhalla and her co-author presented their paper- "Contactless Shopping during COVID-19: Te Moderating Role of Attribution-driven Motives" at the annual BEA Conference in April. Tey presented their paper virtually via the conference platform on April 19. Te session was slotted 11 AM CST/12 PM EST during the session “Strategic Communication in A Connected World.” Dino Chiecchi and Kym Fox participated in a panel discussion on the state of student media at the Texas Association of Managing Editors annual conference in Dallas in April. Chiecchi organized a Meet the Pros session at TCU and is the auctioneer for the gala’s live auction. Dr. Ali Forbes gave three panel presentations at the 2022 Broadcast Education Association international conference in April in Las Vegas. Dr. Amber Hinsley and an interdisciplinary team of researchers had their manuscript "Credibility in the time of Covid: Cues that audiences look for when assessing information on social media and building confdence in identifying ‘fake news’ about the virus" accepted to the journal Open Information Science . Te piece will be published in a special issue titled "Navigating Information Trough the Uncertain Times of COVID-19." Her co-authors are Dr. Ilwoo Ju (Purdue), Dr. Taehwan Park (St. John's University), and Dr. Jennifer Ohs (Saint Louis University). Dr. Vanessa de Macedo Higgins Joyce published her research "Moving Barriers to Investigative Journalism in Latin America in Times of Instability and Professional Innovation" in the journal Journalism Practice . Her research team at the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas found that women journalists, those with looser professional ties and those working in a digital environment are increasingly vulnerable to threats in Latin America. Dr. Judy Oskam served on two panels focusing on professional development at the 2022 Broadcast Education Association international conference in April. Oskam attended the BEA onsite conference and gave a presentation on a panel entitled Best Practices in Building Successful Multimodal Faculty Mentoring Programs: Hits, Misses, Best Intentions, and Practical Fixes. Jennifer Scharlach , Dr. Prisca S. Ngondo [1] and Dr. Vanessa Higgins Joyce teamed up with Texas Association for Mexican American Chambers of Commerce (TAMACC) for a vaccine hesitancy study among Texas Hispanics. Te preliminary results of the study have received statewide media attention such as San Marcos Daily Record , KSAT, KVUE and Click2Houston. Te project was also presented at TXST's Health Scholar Showcase on April 8. Te information is being utilized in undergraduate and graduate strategic communication courses to create strategies and tactics to combat vaccine hesitancy. STUDENT ACCOLADES Timia Cobb [2] was selected for the Newhouse Graduate Newspaper Fellowship for Minorities at Syracuse University and will begin the master’s program in July. Te program awards two fellowships each year that covers tuition and books as well as provides a monthly stipend, health insurance and travel funds to attend professional conferences. Cobb is completing a reporting fellowship at the Texas Tribune this spring and formerly served as the University Star news editor. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Megan (Wehring) Navarro , who graduated in 2020, has been named editor of the Hays Free Press and News Dispatch , a community newspaper that covers Kyle, Buda and northern Hays County. She was assistant news director at KTSW and was a Dow Jones News Fund intern while at Texas State. SCHOOL ACCOLADES KTSW 89.9 received six awards in the 2022 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association Previously Published Contests, including frst place in Overall Excellence: Website, Narrative Writing: Critical Review and Podcast categories. Te student staf was also recognized with 2 second place awards in the Live Sports Coverage – Audio and Sportscast – Audio categories, and a third place award in Advertising/PSA/Promo category. Te 30th anniversary of the frst broadcast of KTSW 89.9 on April 15, 1992 was celebrated the week of April 11-15, with on-air alumni guests and a social gathering at Industry on April 15th. Te anniversary celebration will continue for the rest of 2022 and will culminate with events during Mass Comm week in early October, including KTSW panels on Mass Comm Week Friday, October 7 and a luncheon on Saturday, October 8. Te Media Innovation Lab (MILab) will host 23 fellows in the 4th cohort of the PhDigital Bootcamp this summer as a completely online ofering. PhDigital Online is a continuation of the Knight Foundation grants totaling $225k. 2022 fellows represent universities around the globe, including University of Wisconsin, University of Missouri, Ohio University, Michigan State University, National University Ireland & more. Te program has already trained 60 scholar-educators in the previous cohorts. Additional information about PhDigital Online and the 2022 fellows can be found at phdigitalbootcamp.com. Te 2022 Texas State NSAC team placed 1st at the District-level in National Student Advertising Competition sponsored by the American Advertising Federation. [3] Tis is Texas State’s second 1st-place fnish in three years. In addition to placing frst, the team also won the award for Best Media Plan. Tey competed against schools from Texas and Oklahoma. Te team moved on to semi-fnal on May 6th for a chance to compete in the national fnals held in Nashville, Tennessee in early June. Students participating in the competition include Kaleb Brendle , Veronica Cardenas , Jenna Carroll , Tyson Cash , Catherine Dienert , Tabitha Eline , Erica Fierro , Janet Hagedorn , Parker Healy , Emma Herrera , Kelsey Hiles , Genesis Lopez , Caitlyn McIntyre , Eva Nobles , Yarely Ortiz Hernandez , Ethan Ring , Isla Ruiz , Hannah Sharp , Khameyah Taylor , Kaitlynn Turner , Dafne Vargas Tovar , and Johnny Vasallo .
