COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION APRIL AND MAY ISSUE | SPRING 2022 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING We just celebrated graduation, with over 650 degrees awarded at our May ceremony. It was a joyous day of celebration with students and their families, and a ftting conclusion to a highly successful semester. Faculty and students continue to win awards and assume leadership positions. Joey Fauerso was awarded a 2022 Guggenheim Fellowship in the Fine Arts (p.3). Communication Design students won 170 awards in the Graphis New Talent 2022 competition (p.5). Ann Burnette became Vice President of the Southern States Communication Association and multiple Communication Studies faculty and alumni won Top Paper awards (pp.8- 9). Te LBJ Debate Society and Elton Abernathy Forensics Society placed 2nd in both the International Forensics Association tournament and the National Online Forensics Championships (pp.9-10). Christa Oliver was accepted to the 2022 School of Teatre and Performance Research at Harvard University (p.12). KTSW earned six awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, and our National Student Advertising Competition team won their district and has advanced to the national semi-fnals (p.15). Martin McCain won a Global Music Award and performed at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center (p.17). Multiple Music alums won Teacher of the Year Awards (p.19). Adriana Scalice went straight from graduation to the national tour of Mean Girls (p.22). Alums Edwin Bates and Ben Toomer made their Broadway debuts, while Anna Uzele has a featured role in Apple TV’s Dear Edward (pp.22-23). Alum Abe Garcia was recently named the Chief Creative Ofcer at Dieste, LA/Dalla/NY, a frm owned by Distinguished Alum Tony Dieste (p.5). Ana Baer’s video dances continue to screen across the globe (p. 12), and Hank Hehmsoth’s tenure as a jazz research fellow has produced a treasure trove of materials that are now available online (p.17).
