College of Fine Arts and Communication | 9 4 SPC William Fettig with the Eighth Army Band in Seoul, South Korea 5 Alumnus Richard Trammell with his private voice studio students 6 Alumna Lyndsea Woodall, who was recently awarded First Year Teacher of the Year 18 | April & May | College News Dr. Martin McCain recently performed at Carnegie Hall with the Gateways Music Festival Orchestra to a sold-out audience. Te Gateways Orchestra made history by being the frst African American orchestra to be invited to be featured in a Carnegie Hall season. Te program included works by Brahm, Walker, Price and a world-premiere with Grammy Award winner, Jon Batiste. Dr. Martin McCain released a new album with the McCain Duo, entitled Renew . Te project, which consists of new sacred arrangements for bass trombone and piano recently received a Global Music Award. Dr. Martin McCain was recently invited to perform as guest bass trombone with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. He shared the stage alongside the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra as both ensembles performed Wynton Marsalis' Swing Symphony. Dr. Todd Oxford , served as an adjudicator at the 8th ENKOR International Winds and Percussion Competition based in London, United Kingdom. "ENKOR provides unique and extraordinary opportunity for young musicians to be heard and recognized by major artists, teachers, and infuential people in the music industry. He also served as an adjudicator at the Coltman Chamber Music Competition which is an annual national level competition based in Austin, Texas. Coltman Competition provides performance experience and expert commentary to advanced applicants. Winners of the competition are ofered a cash prize in addition to multiple performance opportunities including a live-broadcast on KMFA 89.5. Alec D. Scherer , Ph.D., recently published "Efects of Score Study on Undergraduate Musicians’ Performance Ratings and Rehearsal Attitudes in Chamber Ensembles: An Exploratory Study" in Volume 22 of Research Perspectives in Music Education . Written with co-author Brian A. Silvey, Ph.D., this exploratory study examined the responses of eight trumpet players who participated in two short rehearsals with and without prescribed score study tasks. Although no signifcant diferences were found in performance achievement or rehearsal attitudes, because score study procedures did not detract from the experience incorporation of group score study in rehearsals may be a valuable addition to traditional rehearsal procedures. Dr. Nico Schüler was invited to give a guest lecture and teach an international workshop on Computational Analysis of Music Performances at the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia in March 2022. In early May, he presented a paper at the international conferences "Possibilities and Limitations of Digital Annotation Tools for Audio-Visual Material with a Focus on Sound and Music" at the Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz, Germany. Earlier in the spring, Dr. Schüler presented a paper on “Networks of Black Artists in Minstrel and Jubilee Ensembles in the US in the Late 19th Century” at the College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference and a paper on “Rediscovering ‘Authentic’ African-American Music in the US in the Late-19th Century” at the American Musicological Society Southwest Chapter Conference. Seventeen undergraduate students, all supervised by Dr. Schüler, presented posters with original research related to popular music at the Annual Undergraduate Research Conference at Texas State. Dr. Vanguel Tangarov was invited to participate in the First Online Clarinet Festival "InMusic" in Portugal which took place fromMarch 18th - April 15th. He was honored to be included in the faculty roster among some of the top clarinetists around the world, including names such as Martin Fröst, Wenzel Fuchs, Walter Seyfarth, François Benda, and Nicolas Baldeyrou to name a few. His lectures and master classes were highly acclaimed, and his participation created excellent opportunities for future professional collaborations at the international level. STUDENT ACCOLADES Daveda Karanas and Dr. Richard Novak recently brought their students to the 2022 South Texas Nats Chapter Student Auditions, hosted by Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. Finley Hagan (Sophomore/Vocal Performance) and Brissa Trondle (Freshman/Music Studies), both students from Daveda Karanas' studio, placed 2nd in their divisions. ALUMNI ACCOLADES SPCWilliam Fettig (B.A. 2019) continues to serve his country as a musician with the Eighth Army Band stationed in Seoul, South Korea. [4] Charlie Grisson (Music Studies 21') was recently awarded the Outstanding Rookie of the Year Award at Cloverleaf Elementary in Galena Park ISD. Amy Dixon Hatch will receive her Ph.D. in Music Teory from the University of North Texas this spring. In the fall, she begins as an Assistant Professor of Instruction in Music Teory at the University of Texas at Arlington. Amy recently presented a paper from her dissertation research titled "Developing Ogolevets' Doubly Augmented Prime: A Voice-leading Structure in the Music of Shostakovich." Also at the conference, theory faculty Dr. Cynthia I. Gonzales and Dr. Jose Garza chaired sessions. Matt Hurtado (B.M. 2015) currently performs on euphonium with the Yokohama Euphonium Ensemble and trombone at Universal Studios Japan. Texas State Alumni and Band Director, Mr. Cristian Lira (B.M. 2008, M.M. 2018) was recognized as the Teacher of the Year by McCormick Middle School, Buda. Kelly Reyes (M.M. Choral Conducting, May 2007) was recognized by Hays CISD as the 2022 District Secondary Teacher of the Year for all 25 campuses during a celebration on May 3, 2022. Kelly is the choir director for Wallace Middle School and oversees the largest choir in the district with 130 members in the Ranger Choir. According to comments read during the Teacher of the Year ceremony, Kelly "teaches them [students] with grace and by herself. Mrs. Reyes has provided our students with unique opportunities that they would not normally get to do, such as performing at a Spurs game. Mrs. Reyes is not only a leader on our campus but also in the music community. She is an asset to her colleagues, the district, the community, and most importantly, all of her students!" Richard Trammell (B.M. Vocal Performance '12) recently brought 8 students from his private voice studio to the 2022 South Texas Nats Chapter Student Auditions, hosted by Del Mar College in Corpus Christi, Texas. Out of eight students, seven placed in the fnals. Taylor Jaeger (HS Music Teater, Treble), Will Moeller (HS Music Teater, TBB), Shaun Torton (Lower HS Classical, TBB), and Cameron Duggins (Upper HS Classical, TBB) placed 1st in their divisions, Cassie Westlund (HS Music Teater, Treble), and Mackenzie Oberlin (Lower HS Classical, Treble), placed 2nd in their division, and Mason Oberlin (Lower High School, TBB) placed 3rd in his division. [5] Lyndsea Woodall recently was awarded the First Year Teacher of the Year Award.
