The Sam Houston State University Faculty Brass Quintet performed Dr. Wilds’s "Sonata for Trombone and Brass Quartet" on April 3rd. This piece was the result of a consortium led by fellow Texas State University faculty member Jett Walker . "Rising Tide," Dr. Wilds’s recent composition for trombone choir, has been performed by the University of Central Arkansas Natural Slides, Western Michigan University Trombone Choir, The University of Georgia Trombone Choir, Ball State University Trombone Choir, RAZORBONES Octet (University of Arkansas), and the Texas State University Trombone Choir. STUDENT ACCOLADES Shelby Avants has been accepted to the Summer Music Festival in Tuscany, which focuses on collegiate and advanced-level chamber music and solo performance. Stefanie Bilidas received an honorable mention for Best Student Paper at South Central Society for Music Theory for the paper “Timbre and Generic Conventions in Cover Songs from Tribute Albums.” Evan Blaché was one of thirteen composition fellows to participate in the annual PREMIERE|Project Festival at Concordia University Irvine. Blaché will work with singers of Choral Arts Initiative—one of Southern California’s premier choral ensembles and recipient of the ASCAP/Chorus America Award for Adventurous Programming—and will also receive close mentorship from distinguished composition faculty members. Nikkei Flores received the Best Poster Award at the 2022 College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference for his research on “All the Things You Are: On the Inclusion of Jazz Music in the Teaching of Music Theory and Aural Skills.” Graduate music theory student Garrett Douglas received the Best Paper Award at the 2023 College Music Society South Central Chapter Conference for his research on “Local, National, Glocal: A Case Study on Select San Marcos Popular Music Artists.” Both research projects were supervised by Dr. Nico Schüler. Bobby Haris has been accepted to the Rocky-Ridge Music Festival in Colorado for this coming summer, Jack Wilds served as the clinican for the Alabama Middle School All-State Band Richard D.
