20 | April & May | College News MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES Ames Asbell was a featured guest artist at the 8th Interna- tional Viola Forum, held in three cities across Poland in ear- ly-April. Alongside four other violists from the U.S., Chile, and Poland. Asbell presented performances and masterclasses at the Akademia Sztuki (Arts Academy) in Szczecin, the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań, and the Grazyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz University of Music in Łódź. In Poznań, she was joined by TXST School of Music professors Ian Davidson (oboe) and Jason Kwak (piano) for performances and masterclasses in celebration of a newly established partnership between the TXST School of Music and the Ignacy Jan Paderewski Academy of Music. [1] In a recent edition of Double Reed News , the magazine of the British Double Reed Society, author Peter Satchell reviewed Ian Davidson’s solo English horn (cor anglais) recital, given as part of the 2024 RioWinds Festival. Satchell wrote: “lan Davidson (cor anglais, Texas State University, Austin, Texas, USA) and Miriam Grosman (piano, Brazil) provided a stun- ning showcase for the cor anglais—their entire concert was an education in the beauty of the cor.” • Davidson has been invited to join the New York Kam- mermusiker as Co-Principal Oboe. During her Fulbright Scholar Award to Nepal in the fall of 2024, Daris Hale was sponsored by the U.S. Embassy to assist the Maldives National University in developing its new performing arts curriculum. Additionally, she delivered lectures to key stakeholders on strategies for advancing the performing arts sector in the Maldives by leveraging tourism, drawing parallels to her previous work in Arusha, Tanzania. [2] Hank Hehmsoth has been invited to join All About Jazz (AAJ)—the world’s leading jazz publication—as a contrib- uting writer. His byline now appears on his first published article as an AAJ staff member, titled “The Visual Language of Jazz,” which explores how he creates at the crossroads of music and visual art, blending the spontaneity of jazz with the depth of composition and the expressive power of abstract painting. Whether at the piano, in the studio, on canvas, or in the archives of jazz history, his work is dedicated to pushing artistic boundaries and inspiring new connections.
