FACULTY ACCOLADES Ann Bur ett delivered a talk on the arguments used by woman sufrage leaders at the program “Selling Sufrage: Words and Symbols to Win the Vote and the ERA.” Te occasion was a fundraising event for the Turning Point Sufrage M morial Association, which is raisi g money f r a national memorial to commemorate the movement that secured w men’s right to vote. She was also interviewed as an expert on presidential commun cation by the Washington Post for a piece entitled, “From ‘my generals’ to ‘my Kevin,’ Trump's preferred possessive can be a sign of afecti or control.” Michael Bur s was t e keynote speaker at Te Ohio State Univ rsity's Acad mic Leadership Forum. [ 1 ] He guided the provost and every vice p sident, dean, and chair/director at Ohio State through a workshop focused on best practices for cond cting interdisciplina y research. Tis workshop was based of of the CoSearch program he developed with Marian Houser. Manusheela Pokharel [ 2 ] published “Cancer information ove load: Discri ina t validity and relationship to sun safe behaviors,” in Patient Education and Counseling . Her ar icle, “Health communic on roles in Latino, Pacifc Islander, and Caucasian Families: A qualitative investigation” was recently published in the Journal of Genetic Counseling . STUDENT ACCOLADES M.A. students Sean Dyhre , Jorlanditha Austin , and Noah Dawson travelled with Dr. Stephanie Dailey to the Organizational Communication Mini Conference at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. [ 3] Dr. Michael Burns spent fve weeks this summer working with NBC's TODAY show at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. While in Tokyo, Michael worked as a Production Manager and oversaw the TODAY show's production runners. He managed the show's logistics and worked closely with NBC talent, Olympic athletes, and the United States Olympic Committee coordinating production needs. Tis was Michael’s 6th Olympic Games with the TODAY show. He was also featured on KXAN News talking about his experience working an Olympic Games in the middle of a pandemic. Te fr t event was one of Brown De r United Methodist Church’s monthly vir ual “Conversations on Race.” Start d after the Sherman Park Uprisin (also known s the 2016 M lwaukee riots), “Conv rsations on Rac ” is a program intended to bring people together to iscuss to ics related to systematic rac sm and how to address the ha ms caus d by injustice. T seco d event c nected students with Mrs. Varda Ratner of the Holocaust Memorial Museum of San Antonio. Mrs. Ratner is a long-time volunteer docent at the mus um and the child of two Holocaust survivors. She also recentl pearheaded a community-led efort to see that Texas Senate Bill 1828, c ating a week of Holocaus education in public sc ools, was passed into law in Texas. She discussed her family’s survival experiences during this virtual pr sentation. Te third event was a virtual talk with Gabriele Daniels, project manager of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI). Te EJI works with ommuni ies that have been marginalized by poverty and discouraged by unequal treatment. It is committed to changing the narr ve ab ut race in America. Te fourth even featured civil rights lawyer Savannah Kumar of the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas who talked about their recent advocacy eforts. Te fnal event featured Tafeni English, who directs the Southern Poverty Law Center's Civil Rights Memorial Center. She discussed the SPLC's advocacy eforts to combat hate & extremism. HAVE AN IDEA ?! C3 The Center for Communication, Collaboration & Creativit y (C3) C3 WELCOMES MEREDITH WILL IAMS, NEW POST-AWARD RC! In June, C3 welcomed Meredith Williams as the new Post-Award Research Coordinator for the College of Fine Arts and Communication (CoFAC). Meredith graduated from TXST in 2005 with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Management and has worked at the university since her graduation. For the past seven years, Meredith served as the Post-Award Research Coordinator for the College of Liberal Arts. Before that, she was an Administrative Assistant for the Department of Communication Studies within our college. Meredith brings with her over a decade of experience navigating the internal systems and regulations at TXST as well as a valuable grasp on managing internal and external awards. Please welcome Meredith back to CoFAC and do not hesitate to let her know if you need help or have any questions related to the post-award management of an award. REP APPL ICATIONS ARE OPEN! Research Enhancement Program (REP) applications are now open! All applications are due by 5PM on Wednesday, October 13th. Eligible faculty members can apply for up to $8,000 if submitting alone or $16,000 if submitting with two or more collaborators. Faculty of Practice are eligible to apply for a REP. After dropping from 2nd to 5th last year in allocated REP funds, CoFAC is hoping to see a signifcant increase in applications in this year’s REP competition. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 9 CSGA HOSTS PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT EVENTS Te Communication Studies Graduate Association (CSGA) is a departmental organization dedicated to unifying the graduate students in Communication Studies at Texas State. CSGA members come together for ofcial and unofcial events including professional development, research seminars, social and philanthropic events. Te frst event of the semester featured a professional development activity entitled Leveling Up: (Re) Envisioning Success in Graduate School. Te members developed strategies for succeeding in graduate school, helped each other (re)envision what success means for them, and talked about how to get the most out of their experience in the M.A. program. After that, everyone in attendance was invited to play Communication Studies trivia. Te second event was Conferencing 101 and centered on academic conferences. Students learned about what they are, what to expect, and how to succeed during every step of the process from submission to presentation.
