YEAR in Rev i ew - AUGUST - SEPTEMBER - OCTOBER University welcomes a record freshman class of 7573 students; university enrollment is 38,171, with students representing all 50 states as well as 78 countries; in the college nearly 400 faculty and staff welcome 5062 majors and 1427 minors to campus for the fall semester ; Texas State student demographics are 40.5% white, 40.5% Hispanic, 11% African American, 2.6% Asian, 2% Multi-Racial, 2% International, and 1.4% Other; the Bobcat Marching Band begins practice with over 300 members. Theatre hosts 20th Black and Latino Playwrights Celebration and honors August Wilson; as part of the event Eugene Lee does a 3-week run of Wilson’s autographical one-man show How I Learned What I Learned in the newly renovated Evans Auditorium; Art faculty are part of grants from the National Science Foundation, the Andy Warhol Foundation, and the Holt/Smithson Foundation; Music hosts their annual Choral Collage featuring six different choral groups. Journalism and Mass Communication host their 32nd annual Mass Comm Week , with nearly 40 industry leaders in attendance; KTSW inducts five new members into their Hall of Fame; in Dance, LeAnne Smith oversees her 38th and final concert as Artistic Director of Opening Door Dance Theatre; alum Chas Harvey plays the title role in The Actors’ Gang 40th anniversary revival of Ubu the King , directed by Tim Robbins; alum Brad Engleking wins an Emmy for Outstanding Sound. - FEBRUARY - MARCH - APRIL Communication Studies hosts 7th TEDx ; Music hosts 20th Eddie Durham Jazz Celebration and 35th Hill Country Jazz Festival; University Arts presents a sold-out performance by the Duke Ellington Orchestra; the Supple Music Series hosts Jackie Venson; Theatre students win 21 awards at the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF); Dance professor Ana Baer’s installation “Latent Spaces” is shown in Malta’s National Gallery. Annie Silverstein wins 2 awards in the film portion of SXSW ; Journalism and Mass Communication faculty and students team up for SXTXState, their 14th year covering the SXSW Interactive conference; Daris Hale does a Fulbright in Nepal; Dance students present multiple pieces at the Gala Concert of the regional American College Dance Festival; Jenna Ramon and Erica Fierro named among the 50 Most Promising Multicultural Students by the American Advertising Federation; Evan Blanché wins the Golden Hornet String Quartet Smackdown VIII. Haley Bass, Callum Ritter, and Hanna Prince win national championships at the National Online Forensics Championships , with the team placing second overall; Communication Design students win 116 awards in the Graphis New Talent 2023 competition; four Theatre students advance to the Kennedy Center as KCACTF National Finalists, with Angelica Hadiwibowo winning the top award for costume design; students with The University Star win 15 awards from the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association. 2022 34 College Report 2023
