JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION Advertising, Digital Media Innovation, Electronic Media , Mass Communication, Journalism, & Public Relations FACULTY ACCOLADES Dr. Michael Devlin’s research examining the intersection of sport, fans, and advertising was recently featured in two publications. First, his book chapter titled, “Sport and Advertising” was published in Dr. Andrew C. Billings’ (editor) Defining Sport Communications . The chapter discusses how sport is used as a vehicle for advertising, and how advertising strategies are then used to effectively promote sport. More recently, the Journal of Sports Media , published Dr. Devlin’s manuscript, “Fighting Fandom: How fan identity influences self-reported and physiological arousal during exposure to violent sport imagery.” Four advertising students ( Matthew Miller , Maryorie Pavon Mejia , Karen Augustin , and Simon Laporte ) have been nominated as finalists for the 2017 American Advertising Awards for work completed during Dr. Michael Devlin’s Copy and Layout 1 course. Students will find out if they won Gold, Silver, or Bronze on February 25th during the AAF Addy’s Award Show for their advertising campaign titled “A Common Language” for Global Partners for Peace. Emily A. Ehmer , School of Journalism and Mass Communication, and Miriam S. Sobre-Denton, Department of Communication Studies, received a Texas State University Research Enhancement Program grant of $16,000 for 2017-18. The research team will study two San Antonio-based organizations that serve asylum seekers and refugees including the agencies’ current intercultural programs and training, strategic communication employed by the organizations and local media coverage of migrant and refugee issues. Emily had a manuscript published in the first issue of 2017 in Critical Studies in Media Communication titled “Learning to stand on their own: contradictory media representations of Burmese refugees by nonprofit organizations.” 1 2 3 Judy Oskam, 2017 National Association of Television Program Executives Faculty Fellow Holly Wise with the SJMC Global News Team Senior Advertising major, Breonna Ruffin with Jenny Buschhorn 10 | January & February | College News Dr. Vanessa Higgins Joyce’s recently published study “Ethical perspectives in Latin America’s journalism community” ( International Communication Gazette , January) was featured in a February article by Journalism Research News , an European news site about academic knowledge in journalism. Dr. Judy B. Oskam, was selected as a 2017 National Association of Television Program Executives Faculty Fellow. [ 1 ] Each year NATPE competitively selects approximately 35 faculty from across the globe to attend the annual marketplace and conference. The 2017 event was held January 15-19th in Miami. The annual NATPE Market & Conference attracts executives from around the world for sessions featuring leaders from all facets of the global telecommunications industry, along with hundreds of exhibiting companies. Olga Mayoral Wilson , APR, Fellow PRSA, has been invited to serve as a member of the Public Relations Society of America’s national Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) Committee. As a committee member Olga will help PRSA achieve its D&I goals of making the profession more diverse and inclusive to its members and the organization that it serves. PRSA champions diversity of thought, cultures, disciplines, ideals, gender and age among PRSA members and its leaders. Holly Wise took the SJMC Global News Team to Nicaragua from January 2 - January 13. [ 2 ] They embedded with the College of Health Sciences inter- professional study abroad program and covered their medical work in rural Nicaraguan villages. The students – Exsar Arguello , Monica Grice , Allison Fluker , Taeler Kallmerten and Darcy Sprague – produced more than 30 pieces of multimedia and written stories. Recently, the Texas State University Interprofessional Service Learning Study Abroad Program Team was selected as the recipient of the February 2017 Texas State Quarterly Team Award. STUDENT ACCOLADES Twelve Texas State University public relations students made the trip to New York for the Third Annual Bobcat Promotions Professional Development Tour under the guidance of Chuck Kaufman . The week-long visit to New York also featured visits with Edelman, Fleishman- Hillard, Rubinstein PR, Ogilvy Public Relations and Boneau/Bryan-Brown. Students also visited with top communications officials with the 9-11 Memorial and Museum. The trip began with a mixer with a dozen Texas State alumni working in various media aspects in New York. Among those attending and speaking were Christopher Henry of Edelman and Maira Garcia of The New York Times. Students attending this year were Victoria Whitwell , Mary Edmond , Danielle Martinez , Savannah Stockton , Vanessa Mora , Kristen Torrez , Kate Jones , Kris Bushong , Taylor Carfield , Kaley Consford , Nysha Morgan and Larisa Gawlik . Senior advertising major, Breonna Ruffin , traveled to New York City in February for the annual Most Promising Multicultural Students (in Advertising) awards ceremony and conference with Jenny Buschhorn . [ 3] Ruffin was presented her award as one of 50 outstanding students from around the country at a luncheon full of ad industry heavy hitters. The conference included on site visits and group discussions with Google, CNN, Bloomberg, McCann Worldwide, Omnicom Group, FCB, Publicis Groupe and IPG. Ruffin left the conference with a beautiful trophy and the skills and contacts to get a job. Buschhorn left with a new set of contacts for visits and conference calls from industry recruiters. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Texas State advertising alum Matt Shoewalter talked with Jenny Buschhorn’s Advertising Campaigns (MC4307). The May 2016 advertising graduate spoke about what it takes to get a job with a top advertising agency. Matt is currently a junior copywriter at Arnold Worldwide working on accounts such as Century Link and Jack Daniels. Students were given real world suggestions, “have a great personal website, do your research, find agencies that do great work you can get excited about, send out a boatload of resumes and cover letters, be different but yourself and keep bugging them until they talk to you.” DEPARTMENT ACCOLADES Political strategist and ABC News commentator Matthew Dowd was a featured speaker in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Lecture Series on February 9th. He talked to Texas State University mass communication and political science students about politics and the media.
