COMMUNICATION STUDIES Communication Studies, Health Communication, Interpersonal Communication, Leadership Studies, Organizational Communication, Persuasive Communication, Political Communication, & Teacher Certif ication in Communication Studies FACULTY ACCOLADES Steven Beebe and co-author Susan J. Beebe published the 5th Edition of A Concise Public Speaking Handbook . They also published the 10th edition of Public Speaking: An Audience-Centered Approach . [1] This new edition was selected by Pearson Publishers as one of ten books from all disciplines to be included in the new IBM Watson initiative that will provide voice-activated, interactive educational material for international distribution. Tricia Burke is the sole author of “Diet and exercise communication as relational maintenance: Associations with Relationship Quality,” a book chapter soon to be published in Contemporary Studies of Relationships, Health, and Wellness . Tricia and co-authors currently have “Let’s hit the gym: Co-worker influence, social support, and organizational socialization in workplace wellness programs” in press for the International Journal of Workplace Health Management . Tricia is also co-author of an upcoming article, “Self, partner, and relationship health motivations and relationship satisfaction” in Health Psychology Report . Ann Burnette presented “Rhetorical symbolism and strategies of American Presidential inaugural addresses: Reflecting and shaping our society’s expectations of a peaceful transfer of power” at the Texas State symposium Transitions in American Democracy . Ann and Wayne Kraeme r co-authored “Communicating a rationale for war: George W. Bush and the rhetoric of imperial righteousness,” in The George W. Bush Presidency: Foreign Policy, Volume 3 . Bush Presidency: Foreign Policy, Volume 3 Professor, Roseann Mandziuk Sean Horan published “Justice in the higher education classroom: Students’ perceptions of unfairness and responses to instructors” in Innovative Higher Education with co-authors Marian Houser and Rebecca Chory. Sean was recently asked to serve as an associate editor for the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships , an interdisciplinary journal published by the International Association of Relationship Research. Sean was also interviewed in Comstock’s magazine about his workplace romance research. Kristen LeBlanc-Farris was awarded the Moody College of Communication’s Dissertation Writing Fellowship (for $10,000) and the Hogg Foundation’s Francis Fowler Wallace Memorial Award (for $1,500) both through the University of Texas at Austin in support of her dissertation entitled “The Impacts of Supportive Interactions on Psychological, Health, and Relational Outcomes in the Context of Rheumatic Disorders.” Kristen, Marian Houser and M.A. alum Angela Hosek co-authored “Historical roots and trajectories of instructional communication” to be published in Handbook of Instructional Communication (2nd ed.) . Kristen also recently trained communication graduate teaching assistants at the University of Texas at Austin on debriefing classroom activities. Roseann Mandziuk [ 3] recently published “Whither the good wife: 2016 presidential campaign spouses in the gendered spaces of contemporary politics” in Quarterly Journal of Speech . She also presented “Inaugural visual symbols and images: Communicating democratic values and portraying the peaceful transition of power” at the Transitions in American Democracy Symposium, sponsored by Texas State University. Philip Salem was recognized by the journal Management Communication Quarterly with a special forum incorporating essays touching upon the past, present, and future of Organizational Communication research. The forum highlights research presented to the conference, “Organizational Communication Traditions, Transitions, and Transformations,” hosted by Philip and Texas State University in 2016. Contributing authors include Philip Salem, Erik Timmerman, Keri Stephens and Timothy Kuhn, among others. Melinda Villagran coordinated the first “Health Scholars’ Showcase,” featuring aspects of Health Communication from all departments on campus. The showcase was composed of a series of events highlighting translational health research at Texas State and featured the research of several Communication Studies faculty members. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Hayley Lyons (B.A., 2015) is an inside sales and marketing supervisor with Nationwide Laboratory Partners, a CLIA-certified, COLA-accredited diagnostics laboratory in Tomball. The company seeks to implement a variety of toxicology testing methods in an effort to address the growing concern of medication abuse and misuse. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 7 FEBRUARY 13-17, 2017 COMM Week is dedicated to lectures and presentations in Communication Studies that can help students in their professional journey. Highlights of the week included presentations by Pam Cox (Vice President, Communications; Whataburger Restaurants and SJMC Alum) and local communication experts and practitioners including Dr. Leah Bryant (MA in Communication Studies, Texas State). COMM Week organizers were Michael Burns , Marian Houser , and Sue Stewart , with assistance from Bekah Fox and Jeremy Hutchins . COMM WEEK 2017
