Dr. Kelly Kaufhold has had two research articles accepted for publication in 2019. Newspaper Research Journal will publish “Mediating Empathy: Te role of news consumption in mitigating attitudes about race and immigration,” and Kaufhold authored “Chapter 11: News and Information Industry” for the Handbook of Media Management and Business . Both are expected to be published later this year. In January, Jon Zmikly was appointed as Assistant Director of the Media Innovation Lab. [2] Zmikly has taught in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication since 2009 and is an alumni of the School’s graduate program. He has been active in introducing innovation eforts to the program, including leading the virtual reality/360 video emphasis, supervising SJMC’s digital presence and assisting with the SXTXState project and the PhDigital Bootcamp. He has also led immersive workshops throughout the university, partnering with entities such as the Division of Information Technology and the Department of Computer Information Systems. In his capacity as Assistant Director, Zmikly will continue these eforts in a more directed and specifc capacity, including increased collaborations across the university and with outside constituents on innovation activities, mentoring faculty on digital training and leading students in support of SJMC and MILab projects. STUDENT ACCOLADES Journalism students mingled with industry professionals and School of Journalism and Mass Communication faculty at an IRE Watchdog Workshop on campus Feb. 9 and 10. [ 3] Presented by Investigative Reporters and Editors (IRE), the event was coordinated by Kym Fox and Beth Clark, attracting 140 participants from across the nation. Session topics included investigative reporting techniques and hands-on data training. Te Watchdog Workshop series, which brings afordable training to cities around the U.S., is supported by the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation. IRE, a nonproft, is headquartered at Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia. Among its projects is NICAR, the National Institute for Computer-Assisted Reporting. SJMC STUDY IN NEW YORK CITY JANUARY 13 – 19, 2019 New York Cit y Twelve students participated in this year's week-long professional development trip to New York City from Jan. 13-19. Tis year, for the frst time, the trip was operated as a Study In America opportunity for course credit. In addition to a reception with SJMC alumni working in New York, the students met with alumna Lemondria Hobbs during a visit at Weber Shandwick and alumna Jeanine Valente with Lividini & Co. Other site visits on the itinerary were Fleishman-Hillard, Burson Cohn & Wolfe; a media briefng at the United Nations and Stephane Dejurric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General; and a visit to the 9-11 Memorial and Museum. On their own, students attended world class museums, theater and even managed to work in the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Te trip was coordinated by Chuck Kaufman and Jennifer Scharlach .
