Antonio and Celtic Woman: Te Best of Christmas concert in College Station. He recorded on the Doc Watkins Orchestra’s Christmas in Jazz, TX CD which was featured on Hallmark’s Christmas in Grand Valley television show. McCain also performed subscription concerts with the IRIS Orchestra, Memphis Symphony Orchestra, Austin Symphony and San Antonio Symphony. He also hosted James Nova from the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, who performed along with the Texas State Trombone Choir to a sold-out crowd in the Performing Arts Center Recital Hall. STUDENT ACCOLADES Peyton Grover was hired as Brass Staf Instructor and Kolten Bippert was selected by audition to perform with Te Academy Drum and Bugle Corps based in Tempe, Arizona. Chris Martinez was selected by audition as Drum Major for Te Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps based in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Te Hill Country Jazz Bones directed by Martin McCain were awarded Honorable Mention in the International Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition, placing next to Michigan State and Eastman School of Music. Students are: Patrick Harwell , Hunter Moffitt , Daniel Ripplinger , Kyle Chappell , Matt Acosta , Dayne Reliford , Abel Alaniz , and Israel Yanez . Texas State trombones were represented in the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra low brass section in a recent concert. Students were: Ramiro Cortez (B.M. ’18), Jett Walker (B.M. ’13 and current MM student), and Steven Vogel (B.M. ’15). [ 2 ] ALUMNI ACCOLADES EDDIE DURHAM JAZZ CELEBRATION For a 2018-2019 NEA Grant, Hank Hehmsoth traveled to New York City to record interviews with National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) Jazz Master Dan Morgenstern, National Jazz Museum in Harlem director Loren Schoenberg, and Phil Schaap, jazz radio broadcaster and Curator of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Hank is creating a website dedicated to Dan Morgenstern’s research and recollections which will preserve this unique heritage while safeguarding and codifying Morgenstern’s large body of knowledge. Te website preservation project will be hosted by Texas State and is expected to be available to the public starting summer 2019. It will include recordings of the annual Eddie Durham Jazz Celebration concert with MP3s available for download, along with each year’s program PDFs, in addition to the videos Hank is making. Hank is working with the Rutgers University Institute of Jazz Studies on a Netfix pilot documentary on Dan Morgenstern. For more information and a sneak peek of the videos, click here. Steven Vogel (B.M. ’15) [ 2 ] has been appointed Assistant Professor of Trombone and Euphonium at Texas Lutheran University, where he will begin teaching Spring 2019.
