COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS AND COMMUNICATION JANUARY AND FEBRUARY ISSUE | SPRING 2020 LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING Welcome to the January-February edition of College News , flled with examples of faculty, students, and alumni excelling at ever-increasing heights. In Art and Design, Jennifer Datchuk was named a United States Artist 2020 Fellow (complete with a $50,000 prize), while Erina Duganne is co-curating an exhibit at Tufts University that is funded by a $60,000 NEA grant (p.2). Communication Studies hosted our 4th annual TEDx (p.7), while multiple faculty published articles and Steve Beebe published the 11th and 12th editions of two of his textbooks (pp.6-7). In Dance, Ana Baer won national and international awards for her screendance work, while Shay Ishii produced a dance concert at the Long Center (p.8). In Journalism and Mass Communication, Cindy Royal presented the Dean’s Seminar (p.11). In Music, Attaca Quartet, the Ensemble-in-Residence at Texas State won their frst Grammy Award, while the School of Music was named the #4 program in the country by gradreports.com based on median salary one year after graduation (p.13). In theatre, Johnny McAllister’s flm Bull will screen at the SXSW Film Festival before its nationwide premier (p.14); Phillip Owen and Sarah Maines designed professionally in Houston (pp.14-15). Student accolades include: a record number of awards by Communication Design students in the Graphis New Talent national competition (p.3); Steven Hernandez won an American Association of Advertising Agencies’ Multi- Cultural Advertising Internship program award, while Amy Rivera and Yessica Rodriguez received an American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Multi-Cultural Student award (p.11); Hanna Hurd’s short flm Method has been selected for two flm festivals and Alison Price will direct an opera in Italy this summer (p.15). Alumni highlights include Logan Floyd starring as Velma Floyd in the upcoming national tour of Chicago and Chelcie Ross having a recurring role on Showtime’s Billions (p.17).
