College of Fine Arts and Communication | 3 1 Jennifer Ling Datchuk's "Enter the Dragon" 2 Elvia Perrin's exhibit Disrupted Geometries featuring paintings, prints, and collages 3 Soomin Remmler’s drawing, “River Runs” 2 | January & February | College News ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art FACULTY ACCOLADES Jennifer Ling Datchuk's "Enter the Dragon" is part of Artpace's 25th Anniversary exhibition Visibilities: Intrepid Women of Artpace . [ 1 ] Tis exhibition focuses on women artists who have either come out of the International Artist in Residence program or have signifcant ties to the institution. Changing Social Discourses opened Wednesday, January 21 at the University of San Antonio Main Art Gallery featuring the work of Jennifer Ling Datchuk, Daniela Cavazos Madrigal and Anh-Tuy Nguyen. Jennifer has been named one of ffty artists across the country as a United States Artist (USA) 2020 Fellow. Tis year, ffty artists across ten creative disciplines will receive unrestricted $50,000 cash awards. Te award honors their creative accomplishments and supports their ongoing artistic and professional development. USA Fellowships are awarded to artists at all stages of their careers and from all areas of the country through a rigorous nomination and panel selection process. Fellowships are given in the following disciplines: Architecture & Design, Craft, Dance, Film, Media, Music, Teater & Performance, Traditional Arts, Visual Art, and Writing. Art for the Future: Artists Call and Central American Solidarity in the 1980s , an exhibition that Erina Duganne is co-curating with Abigail Satinsky at the Tufts University Art Galleries, was awarded a $60,000 National Endowment for the Arts grant. Te exhibition will open in January 2021 at both the Medford and School of the Museum of Fine Arts campuses at Tufts. Four of Joey Fauerso's large scale paintings were acquired for the collection of Frost Bank and were recently installed in the new Frost Bank Tower in downtown San Antonio. Joey's work will be featured in the exhibition State of the Art 2020 at the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art. Joey’s work will be exhibited as part of the show Labor: Motherhood & Art in 2020 (Labor), the premier exhibition in the new University Art Museum (UAM) on the campus of New Mexico State University (NMSU), curated by Marisa Sage and Laurel Nakadat. Margo Handwerker published "Experts rank the top 5 in this decade's art," in Aesthetics for Birds . Brian Johnson's print is included in the Contemporary Print exhibit at the Big Medium Gallery in Austin. Te show was juried by curator Claudia Zapata and was one of several openings at the Canopy complex last weekend. Te Contemporary Print show helped kick of Print Austin , a month-long series of exhibits, artist talks, demonstrations and special events to promote printmaking to a wider audience. Print Austin ended on February 15 with a panel discussion between Zapata and Sightlines Magazine . MiHyun Kim was invited to participate in Art Teleported Brooklyn NY 2020: Te Art Show and Conference for Nomadic Artists organized by CICA Museum. A total of 20 digital media artists and designers around the world presented and exhibited their work at the Box Factory in New York on January 10–11th. Alice Lee and Omari Souza will be presenting at the CAA conference in February, as well as Design and Principles conference in NYC at Pratt. Mark Menjivar is included in the exhibition Walls Turned Sideways: Artists Confront the Justice System which is open until April 19 at the Tufts University Art Galleries in Boston. Mark performed his project Open Letters as part of the DreamWeek Summit in San Antonio. Each annual DreamWeek Summit comprises a series of events designed with a singular purpose in mind: to foster the free exchange of ideas on issues afecting humanity. Elvia Perrin will be exhibiting in Disrupted Geometries . It is an art exhibition of paintings, prints, and collages that have at their core geometric foundations held in tension against the irregular, non-geometric marks that comprise them. [ 2 ] Te collection features work by Shawn Camp , Elvia Perrin , Ruth Shouval, and Randy Twaddle. Te gallery opening was on Saturday, February 1. Soomin Remmler’s drawing, “River Runs” is juried into the 25th Arts North International, and the show was open through February 15 at the Hopkins Center for the Arts in Hopkins, MN. [ 3] Soomin Remmler’s “Waiting IV” is featured in the Colored Pencil magazine's January issue with a short Q and A interview. Omari Souza signed a book contract with Intellect Publishing. Tis book is related to his current research. Omari has also been accepted into a June writing fellowship, hosted by Design Incubation. Gina Tarver’s book Te New Iconoclasts: From Art of a New Reality to Conceptual Art in Colombia, 1961–1975 is a nuanced examination of this transgressive art with regard to its relationship with institutional goals and structures. It was reviewed by Harper Montgomery, Professor at Hunter College, in an article titled, "Innovators and Iconoclasts: Six Books on Latin American Modern and Contemporary Art." Read the article here. STUDENT ACCOLADES Communication Design students won a school-record 65 awards in the Graphis New Talent Annual 2020; over 50 schools competed, and Texas State was the second most awarded program in the country. 2019 AWARD ANNUAL Claudia Roeschmann’s design work for Austin Classical Guitar was published in the 2019 Graphic Design USA Award Annual in December. Claudia was invited to participate in an expert panel discussion “Educational Systems Designed to Ofer Better Learning Experiences and Learning Outcomes” at the Online Education Berlin (OEB) conference in December.
