Steven Beebe published the 11th edition of Public speaking: An audience-centered approach with co-author Sue Beebe. He also published Communicating in small groups: Principles and practices , the 12th edition. [ 1 ] Ann Burnette provided commentary for an article in the Washington Post entitled “Te surprises at Trump’s State of the Union address were carefully planned.” Michael Burns welcomed Jen Faires, manager of Corporate Partner Activation for the Atlanta Hawks and Phillips Arena, as a guest speaker to his Sport Communication class. Jen spoke about how a communication degree is valuable in the sports industry and provided insight on working as a woman in a male- dominated feld. Stephanie Dailey had “A biopsychosocial approach to understanding social media addiction” accepted for publication in the journal Human Behavior and Emerging Technologies . Elizabeth Eger published "Co-constructing organizational identity and culture with those we serve: An Ethnography of a transgender nonproft organization communicating family identity and identifcation" in the International Journal of Business Communication . Kristen Farris was invited by WellCats to present on “Crucial Conversations: Asking for Support” as part of their Wellness Education. In addition, Kristen was also invited by WellCats to write a newsletter concerning "Reframing your Relationships to Support you on your Wellness Journey.” Cassandra LeClair published Being whole: Healing from trauma and reclaiming my voice, a story of achieving healing and wholeness . [ 2 ] Being Whole is Dr. Cassandra LeClair's gripping story of achieving healing and wholeness following years of abuse accompanied by heart-rending secrecy and shame. Te book urges readers to examine, acknowledge, and heal from periods of stress, trauma, and crisis, using their voice in the way that best resonates with them. Manusheela Pokharel published “Obstacles to skin self- examination: Are frontier adults inclined abstainers?” in Psychology, Health & Medicine . She explains that individuals residing in U.S. frontier counties have limited access to dermatology care and higher melanoma mortality rates. Te goal of the study was to identify obstacles to skin self-examination performance via a survey of adults living in a U.S. frontier county. She also received an $8,000 Research Enhancement Award. Her current project centers on developing professional illustrations of how Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) appears on darker skin types and to evaluate the visuals in an online survey experiment with a student sample. STUDENT ACCOLADES Jason Galarza, M.A. Student and COMM 1310 Instructor, piloted a training titled, “Culture of Health: Using Supportive Communication to Build a Healthy Work Culture” for the Department of Residence Life at Texas State. Tis training will soon go university-wide through Human Resources and WellCats. Tis project is part of a Research Enhancement Program grant and was developed and presented with Michael Burns and Kristen Farris . TED X TEXAS STATE UNIVERSITY Texas State University hosted a TEDx event with the theme of “Truth(s)” on February 15. Te event was organized by Communication Studies Senior Lecturer, Michael Burns (pictured) and Management Lecturer, Seth Frei. Te TEDxTexasStateUniversity theme challenged individuals to embrace their personal truths, seek truth, question the uncritical acceptance of truth, and realize that they live in a world of multiple truths. Speakers shared ideas about truth(s) from a variety of felds and perspectives including technology, health, arts and humanities, science and daily life. Speakers included: Cassandra LeClair [ 3] , Erin Cargile, Hector Ruiz, Jessica Soukup, Kayli Head, Maria Tahir, Mueni Rudd, Rachel Runnels, Ray Fisk, and Russ Lang.
