Faculty who are on nine-month contracts, can use grant funding (depending on the funding source guidelines) to pay themselves during the summer. Dependent upon the faculty member’s summer schedule and needs, summer salary, which is paid according to the faculty member’s monthly base salary, can span anywhere from one summer session, both summer sessions, or even just one month. Example: A faculty member has an external grant to pay himself or herself for one summer session at 100% efort. Tis faculty member’s nine-month salary is $54,000, or $6,000 per month ($54,000/9 =$6,000). At a monthly base rate of $6,000, the faculty member would be paid $9,000 for one summer session ($6,000 X 1.5 months). Incentive Pay: Te Texas State incentive pay policy allows for faculty to have dedicated time for their research or creative project and provides a fnancial incentive to bring in external funding. A faculty member who is a principal investigator (PI) or Co-I can request incentive pay if funds from an external grant are used to buy out at least 25% of their base salary as a course release for the fall and/or spring semesters. With approval, the faculty member will receive an incentive pay stipend at the end of the semester. Example: A faculty member has one course buy out (25% base salary) from external funding for the fall semester (4.5 months). Te faculty member’s nine-month salary is $54,000, or $6,000 per month ($54,000/9 =$6,000). Te cost to the grant for a 25% buy out is $6,750 ($6,000 X 25% X 4.5 months). Per PPS 5.06, incentive pay is $2,362.50 ($6,750 X 35%) which would be paid by department funds at the end of the semester. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 7
