John Denis published a new textbook with GIA publications which sold out the frst printing in 1.5 days. Daris Hale (bassoon) and Ian Davidson (oboe) traveled to Rio de Janeiro where they appeared as featured soloists at the RioWinds Festival. Tey also traveled to Mexico City for a series of master classes involving students from music schools in central Mexico; Escuela de Bellas Artes, Escuela de Musica Vida y Movimient Ollin Yoliztli, and Conservatorio Nacional de Musica de Mexico. Teir visit to Mexico City also included a featured chamber music recital that included the premiere performance of Ian’s most recent original composition “Ranch Songs,” scored for oboe and bassoon. [1] On Tuesday Feb 1, baritone Will Liverman and pianist Myra Huang gave the world premiere of Te Long Year , a new song cycle by Michael Ippolito , commissioned by Vocal Arts DC. Te concert was at the Kennedy Center Terrace Teater and included music by Lowe, Strauss, Ravel, Rachmaninof, and Sneed. A review of the concert can be found here. In collaboration with a team of music education researchers, Dr. Alec D. Scherer , Assistant Professor of Music Education, published “Undergraduate Choral Conducting Courses: Examining Students' Practice Behaviors and Instructors' Pedagogy” in the Journal of Music Teacher Education (JMTE). In this study, Scherer and the research team expanded upon their previous investigation of instrumental students by examining choral students and their instructors. Consistent with the aims of JMTE, the team provided suggestions for instructors to consider when designing conducting course curriculum. Dr. Scherer, alongside researchers Dr. Brad Regier (IWU) and Dr. Melissa Baughman (OU), were recently accepted to provide a spoken presentation of their work "Undergraduate Choral Conducting Courses: Examining Students' Practice Behaviors and Instructors Pedagogy" at the 35th World Conference of the International Society for Music Education 2022 (ISME 2022). In addition, Dr. Scherer's proposal Te Efects of Conductor Attire on Ratings of Concert Bands and Teir Conductors: A Pilot Study was accepted to the 35th World Conference of the International Society for Music Education 2022 for roundtable presentation after blind peer review. Te conference, originally scheduled to be held in Brisbane, Australia but rescheduled in a virtual format due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, will be held in July 2022. Dr. Scherer and his co-author Dr. D. Gregory Springer (Florida State University) are interested in the role of visual stimuli on performance perceptions. Dr. Nico Schüler recently published a book chapter on “Orientation Processes and Perspectivism in the Spatiality of Music-Teoretical Research: Refections on the Plurality of Modern Methods and Methodology of Music Analysis” in the book Music and Spatiality (ed. by Miloš Zatkalik, et al., Belgrade, 2021). He also published a research article on “Otto Laske and the Visualization of Electro‐Acoustic Music: Laske’s Visual Music Animations” in the journal Emille, the Journal of the Korean Electro-Acoustic Music Society . STUDENT ACCOLADES JackWoodruf , [2] freshman saxophone student of Dr. Todd Oxford , was selected via audition to perform the inaugural season with the National Youth Wind Ensemble. Culminating in a concert on June 18, 2022 at the historic Warner Teater in Washington D.C. Te National Youth Wind Ensemble was established to bring together the brightest, most talented, and hardworking young musicians from across the United States. Featured conductor clinicians were: Colonel Jason Fettig, United States Marine Band Director and Dr. Kevin Sedatole, Director of Bands at Michigan State University. HALL OF FAME Dr. Jason Kwak has been inducted into the Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame, a prestigious designation recognizing the work of North America’s most committed and passionate piano educators. [3] Pianist Jason Kwak has already enjoyed a successful career, both as an artist and as a pedagogue. He is consistently in high demand for performances, masterclasses, lectures, and adjudications on a state, national, and international level. Tis fall, 44 teachers from the United States and Canada were inducted into the Steinway Teachers Hall of Fame with special events hosted at the historic Steinway factory in New York City.
