LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING On the cover, as President of the National Communication Association, Roseann Mandziuk delivered the keynote address at their national conference in November (p.7). Jasmine Austin, Ann Burnette, Stephanie Dailey, Elizabeth Eger, Kristin Farris, and Manu Pokharel published articles, while Josh Miller received the Janice Hooker Rushing Early Career Research Award from the Southern States Communication Association (pp. 6-7). We also hosted our 7th TEDx event, and grad student Abigail Mellow earned a Thesis Research Support Fellowship (pp. 7-10). In Art and Design, Bethany Johnson earned a Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant, while Margo Handwerker concluded her Holt/ Smithson Foundation research grant (p.3). Erina Duganne co-edited a book, and the Texas State Galleries were awarded a National Endowment for the Arts Challenge grant (pp.2- 3). Alum Jon Flaming finished a collaboration project with Stetson (p.3). In Dance, Ana Baer’s works were presented in Malta, Ireland, Kosovo, Russia, Mexico, and England, while Kaysie Seitz Brown received The Honor Award from the Texas Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, their 2nd highest honor (pp.12-13). In Journalism and Mass Communication, Nandini Bhalla and Cindy Royal published articles, while grad student Bruce Levinson earned an Award of Excellence at the Broadcast Educator’s Association Festival of Media Arts (pp.14-15). Texas State was one of only three universities to be awarded an Investigative Reporters and Editors on Campus grant (p.14). In Music, Ian Davidson published new compositions, while Michael Ippolito’s new Violin Concerto premiered at the Florida Orchestra (pp.16-17). Daris Hale was the runner-up for the 2022 Award for Excellence in Online Teaching, while grad student Ross Sanchez is a finalist in the National Bass Trombone Solo Competition (p.17). In Theatre, Ana Martinez has two new publications, Bryan Poyser’s short film Don’t You Go Nowhere continues to win awards on the festival circuit, and Annie Silverstein and Kenya Gillespie won grants from the Austin Film Society (pp.18-19). The department, as well as faculty and students, won numerous recognitions from the Broadway World Regional Awards (pp.18-20). Undergraduate Julia Cabrera won a fellowship via the United States Institute for Theatre Technology Gateway Program, while grad student Jennifer Gonzalez has won a Sherry Wagner-Board Fellowship (p.19). Four theatre students were selected to present their plays at the regional Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (p.20). Alum Dorell Anthony is writing for Days of Our Lives , Kailey Hyman is in A Man Called Otto with Tom Hanks, and Heather (Newman) Patterson is the Stage Manager for the Cirque du Soleil production of The Beatles LOVE (pp. 20-21). Edi Patterson is the emcee of the Texas Film Awards, Laurel Toupal appears in Showtime’s The L-Word: Generation Q , and Anna Uzele will be the female lead in the new Broadway musical New York, New York (p. 21).
