LETTER FROM THE DEAN DR. JOHN FLEMING As the calendar flips to 2024, we needed an extra day to acknowledge the many accolades of Bobcat faculty, students, and alumni. A sampling of highlights of this edition February of College News: • The cover features our TXST Wind Symphony. They were one of three university bands selected to perform at the Texas Music Educators Association convention, an event attended by more than 20,000 people. • Across the college, faculty continue to take on professional leadership positions: Jeffrey Lieber is on the Texas Historical Commission’s State Board of Review (p.3); Ann Burnette is President of the Southern States Communication Association (p.6); Wayne Kraemer is President of the Board of Directors of the LBJ Museum of San Marcos (p.7); Larry Carlson judges for the Texas Broadcasters Association (p.10); and Debra Price is on the Board of PRSA Austin (p. 10). • In Art and Design (pp.2-3), Andrew Chen published a new article, Jeffrey Lieber lectured in London, Tommy Fitzpatrick has 2 solo shows in California, and Soomin Remmler was in the top 1% for the Derwent Art Prize, resulting in an exhibition in London. One of the TXST Gallery exhibitions was selected for Glasstire ’s Best of 2023. • In Communication Studies (pp.6-7), Stephanie Dailey and Elizabeth Eger published multiple articles. The Texas State Speech and Debate won the Texas Intercollegiate Forensics Association (TIFA) State Championship; they have won more TIFA titles than any other university. • In Dance (p.8), Jonathan Pattiwael finished in the top 4 in a Hip Hop Dance Festival. Student Rishon Harvey was accepted for an Alvin Ailey Summer Intensive, while Bri Lozano was accepted into the Disney College Program. [ P G . 1 2 ] • In Journalism and Mass Communication (pp.10- 11), Cindy Royal published an article, “Dino” Chiecchi conducted a book reading and signing, and Zaria Jackson was one of 50 students nationwide named an American Advertising Federation Most Promising Multicultural Student. Advertising students participated in the American Advertising Addy Awards, where they won one gold, five silver, and 3 bronze awards, along with 1 student scholarship winner. • In Music (pp.12-13) Ian Davidson and Daris Hale performed in Brazil, and Craig Hella Johnson was named an Artistic Partner at the Oregon Bach Festival and was honored with the Graven Award from Wartburg College. Student Jenna Stone won the U.S. Marine Band clarinet audition and will join the military ensemble after graduating this year. Alum Coty Raven Morris is a finalist for the Music Educator Award presented by the Recording Academy and Grammy Museum. • In Theatre (pp.14-15), Cheri Prough DeVol designed lights for the Minnesota Opera, and Bryan Poyser’s short film Don’t You Go Nowhere screened at 39 festivals, winning 17 awards. The thesis films of Jasmine Aurelio, Jordan Banks, Emery Jones, and Nicole Soria all made it into film festivals, with Jasmine winning Best Student Short at the Dreamachine International Film Festival in Los Angeles. • One can see theatre alums on stage and screen (p.15). Dannie McCallum has a principal role in the Disney+ show Echo (part of the Marvel catalog); Morgen McKynzie has a featured role in the film Mean Girls , and Taylor Scorse plays the lead in the independent film Under the Influencer . Juliette Redden is in the national tour of Les Miserables , Peyton Russell is an Executive Assistant at HBO, Colin Trudell appears on the new cast album of Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Musica l, and Vanessa Gonzalez has a stand-up comedy special on Netflix and was featured in Texas Monthly .
