College of Fine Arts and Communication | 11 Since 1992 the Texas State University sound recording technology program has been a national leader in preparing audio professionals. Alumni work as Recording Engineers, Digital Editors, Sound Designers, Composers, Producers, and in a range of fields including Music Recording, Broadcasting, Gaming, Multimedia, as well as Film and Video Post-production. They work for companies across the country including Apple, Nintendo, Microsoft, and numerous recording studios. They are also entrepreneurs, such as the three featured here. DANNY REISCH Danny Reisch (B.M. in Sound Recording Technology, Concentration in Entrepreneurship) opened his analog- centric recording studio Good Danny’s in 2007. The Austin Chronicle’s Best of Austin Award for Best Grand Slam Studio, was bestowed upon Good Danny’s in 2014. Other awards include Best Recording Studio in the Austin Music Industry Awards 2013 and Producer of the Year in the Austin Music Awards 2011. Reisch splits his time between running the studio and touring internationally, drumming with his bands Other Lives and Shearwater. DREW HEATON What began as a dream among friends has grown into New Braunfels’ largest and best equipped recording studio and production facility, made by and for musicians. Frustrated by the lack of a local professional recording studio, Gruene Records sought to fill this gap and create a space that would be a comfortable, close, and yet solidly professional. Founded in 2013, Gruene Records is officially opening its studio doors in 2017. Featuring over 1700 square feet of studio space, Gruene Records houses two main studios: Studio A, with its large tracking room, great for recording drums and live bands, its well- equipped and meticulously designed control room, and two isolated sound booths; and Studio B, featuring a high-ceiling live room and control room, ideal for doing voice overs, budget projects, and podcast production. The studio is also equipped with a video post-production suite, and also features a comfortable lounge and kitchen area complete with fridge. Gruene Records is perfect for everyone, from professional musicians to weekend warriors, and also offers on-location recording services. In addition to music and CD production services, the studio covers a wide range of multimedia needs, including video production, web design, graphic design services, brand development, album artwork, t-shirts and merchandise. BRAD ENGLEKING Brad Engleking has been a sound professional in the film industry since 2000 when he graduated from Texas State University with a BA in music/sound recording technology. During this time he has worked on a wide range of film projects from Robert Rodriguez’s Sin City to Terrence Malick’s Song to Song . Brad’s 15+ year collaboration with director Robert Rodriguez and Troublemaker Studios began in 2002 with Spy Kids 2 . This movie was one of the first ever action films mixed on Pro Tools. Brad helped to design and install the system, which at the time was revolutionary in the world of large feature film mixing. Brad and and his partner Sergio Reyes have worked together as a mixing team since that time. They excel at bringing a polished and artful sound to the screen and a laugh to every client that they meet. Brad is now also the co-sound supervisor at Troublemaker in charge of overall sound concepts and artistic direction. Brad, Sergio, Robert and co-sound supervisor Tim Rakoczy continue to form the heart of the sound crew at Troublemakers Studio. In addition to his work with Robert Rodriguez, Brad particularly enjoys working with young directors and on independent films. His work on numerous experimental and documentary features and shorts can be seen at festivals around the world. In an effort to help educate future filmmakers, Brad has taught classes and lectured at The University of Texas at Austin Radio Television and Film department and at Texas State University’s Sound Recording Technology department, and has participated in panels and workshops at SXSW. He has also been featured in industry trade publications including: Pro Sound News, Editor’s Guild, Cinemontage, and Studio Daily .
