MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES Texas State was well represented in San Antonio for the recent Texas Music Educators Association annual Clinic/Convention. Faculty who performed, presented or presided included Mary Ellen Cavitt , Lynn Brinckmeyer , Amanda Soto , Keith Winking , Jonathan Babcock , John Schmidt , and Teaching Assistant Jack Wilds . In addition, Adah Jones , Charles Hurt , Caroline Steiger , Lynn Ledbetter , Ian Davidson , Mary Ellen Cavitt, and Keith Winking judged or led All-State sectionals. Lynn Ledbetter received the Phyllis Young Outstanding Studio Teacher award from the Texas Chapter of the American String Teachers Association. At the recent meeting of the Texas Society for Music Theory, Cynthia Gonzales was elected president-elect, which will be followed by a three-year term as president and two-year term of past-president. Senior Lecturer Richard Hall’s ambient electronic piece, “Rain Delay” for three electric guitars and video projection was performed at the 2017 NACUSA Texas Chapter Conference on February 18 at the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Performers included Richard, graduate student Shawn Jones , and junior music major Francisco De La Rosa . Joey Martin who serves as associate dean for the College of Fine Arts and Communication, director of choral activities, and professor of music at Texas State is one of five individuals that are being inducted into Southwestern Oklahoma State University’s Distinguished Alumni Hall of Fame during 2017 Raul I. Beutler at a May 6 Convocation. Todd Oxford , Martin McCain , and Jack Wilds were endorsers at company exhibit booths. The School of Music’s booth looked fantastic and got tremendous attention and traffic, with major staffing by Krystyn Jensen and Al Corley . The alumni reunion hosted by Director Thomas Clark was a fun party. Kudos to Krystyn Jensen who organized these two major components of our presence at TMEA. Raul I. Rodriguez [ 1 ] presented a lecture and solo performance of 10 selections from his book of 30 studies for tuba, Low Blows for Tuba , on March 18 for the 2017 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference in Edinburg at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. STUDENT ACCOLADES Michael Johnson [ 2 ] won the 3rd division of the National Bass Trombone Solo Competition at the American Trombone Workshop. Master’s composition student Thomas Mann won the 2017 NACUSA Texas Composition Competition, Graduate Category, for Suite for Flute, performed by Texas State alumnus Lauren Lyman on February 18 at The University of Incarnate Word in San Antonio. Eleven members of the Texas State Tuba Euphonium Ensemble traveled to south Texas to present a recital of contemporary literature on March 17 for the 2017 South Central Tuba Euphonium Regional Conference in Edinburg at the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. ALUMNI ACCOLADES The first-ever Texas State University Alumni Trombone Choir performed at the 2017 Texas State Trombone Symposium in the Texas State Performing Arts Center. Organized by Jeremiah Ward (B.M. 2013), former students gathered to rehearse and perform pieces that they enjoyed during their time in the Texas State Trombone Choir and Hill Country Jazz Bones. These members are now band directors, private lesson instructors, free-lance musicians, and hold positions in the premiere military ensembles in Washington DC. VocaLibre recently went on the road with Jay Leno. [ 3] Directed by Craig Aamot , they opened for an audience of about 1200 in Corpus Christi and a full house of 1800 in McAllen, which gave them a standing ovation. Their 30-minute set offered music with themes of strength, hope, and compassion. The presentation included some Texas State pride, introductions of all 14 students, their majors and hometowns. The singers were: Kristen DelBosque (Theatre), Johnny Edds (English), Ian Flores (SRT), Collin Friedl (Music Education), Bailey Galindo (Vocal Performance), Faith Hearn (Theatre and Dance), Noah Reinhuber (Vocal Performance), Jenna Quiroz (Music Education), Stephen Richardson (Music Education), Kevin Tarpley (Music Education), Bailey Turner (Vocal Performance), and alumni Kirstin Cara-Simms (Education), Andres Davilla (Spanish), Lindsey Wurdermann (Speech Pathology).
