Chad Dawkins, Associate Director, Texas State Galleries Two Crowns by Tommy Fitzpatrick 33” x 23”, Acrylic on Canvas, 2015 Gabi Martinez’s vase that was included in the Rising Eyes of Texas exhibition ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art FACULTY ACCOLADES As part of the Gulf Coast Intercollegiate Consortium Artist Program, Roger Colombik had an installation open at San Jacinto College in Pearland on Monday, February 27. Each year, an artist is selected to provide a special program for students at colleges in the Consortium. Along with the exhibit, Roger presented the “Artists in Times of War” lecture/dialogue at a few of the programs, including San Jacinto College, College of the Mainland, and Lone Star College -CyFair. Chad Dawkins [ 1 ] wrote the essay for Larry Graeber’s Place to Place , a monograph accompanying the artist’s exhibition at the DE STIJL | PODIUM FOR ART gallery in Austin. Graeber’s sculptures were included in the Fall 2016 exhibition Survey: Texas Sculpture Group at Texas State Galleries. Tommy Fitzpatrick’s painting entitled Two Crowns [ 2 ] from his Cat’s Cradle series will be included in the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston’s Annual Gala and Art Auction on April 7th. MiHyun Kim was invited to present “User-Centered Design: Design Thinking by Developing Understanding and Empathy” in the poster session at AIGA Design Educators Conference, Converge: Disciplinarities and Digital Scholarship in Los Angeles from June 1 – 3. She will give a presentation about design practices in user-center design thinking at WMAS 2017: World Multidisciplinary Art Symposium in Prague, Czech Republic from June 19 – 23. Kathleen McShane Bolton has a show coming up called Island, Oasis, Mirage at the Big Medium Gallery in Austin on June 2 – July 1. This is a three person exhibit including work from Kathleen McShane, Barbara Weissberger and Michael Krueger. STUDENT ACCOLADES Gabi Martinez won a $200 merit award for her vase [ 3] that was included in the Rising Eyes of Texas statewide student juried exhibition at the Rockport Center for the Arts. MFA student Thi Ngyuen was invited as part of the cross disciplinary efforts run by Claudia Roeschmann with students from the MSEC department and the MBA program to compete at the Rice Business Plan Competition in Houston April 6 – 8. Thi’s team is one of 42 to compete for $1.5 million in start-up funding. Seven Texas State School of Art and Design communication design students have had works accepted into the 13th Annual National Student Show and Conference. Selected works will be exhibited in Dallas, March 30 – April 1.
