Te joint venture with the Journalism Education Association aims to match journalists with K-12 teachers to bring more journalism education to schools. Dr. Vanessa Higgins Joyce was invited to write an entry on Latin and South American Journalism for the International Encyclopedia of Journalism Studies, a publication spearheaded by the International Communication Association. She also has two studies accepted to the conference 50 Years in Agenda Setting Research, which will happen in Colorado during the summer. Her studies are entitled Network Agenda Building in Time of Confict with Legacy Media: An Analysis of the President’s Infuence on the Topic of Immigration and Consensus Building on Trust in Government: Contrasting Media and Neighborhood Efects . Dr. Prisca Ngondo presented research co-authored by Dr. Michel Haigh entitled, “Bad Press? How CEOs Drive Business Forward via Apology Strategies” at the 21st Annual International Public Relations Research Conference in Orlando, FL, on March 8. Te Texas State University System Board of Regents named Dr. David Nolan , associate professor of practice in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, a recipient of the Regents’ Teacher Award. Dr. Nolan, along with Dr. Debra Feakes in the Department of Chemistry, are the frst two faculty members to be recognized at Texas State. Te board approved the honors during its quarterly meeting in February at Lamar University in Beaumont. Te Board of Regents annually recognizes exceptional teachers from TSUS member institutions with the Regents’ Teacher Award. Regents’ Teachers are selected based on their outstanding performance as educators, contributions to the development of courses and use of innovative teaching methods, among other criteria. Dr. Nolan will maintain the title of Regents’ Teacher. He was awarded the National Press Photographers Association Robin F. Garland Educator Award for outstanding service as a photojournalism educator and also received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Teaching at Texas State in 2015, the Presidential Award for Excellence in Service at Texas State in 2010 and Honors Professor of the Year in 2008. He has hosted and been on the faculty of the National Press Photographers Association’s Advanced Storytelling Workshop at Texas State since 2009. Four School of Journalism and Mass Communication faculty members will present research in May at the International Communication Association’s 2018 conference in Prague, Czech Republic. Te theme of this year’s conference is Voices, refecting how communication impacts behaviors, defnes relationships, infuences policies, and shapes the world in which we live. Assistant Professor Clay M. Craig will present a paper titled, “Eat Up!: A Content Analysis of Gender Roles and Representations within Food Advertising.” Assistant Professors Michael B. Devlin and Vanessa de Macedo Higgins Joyce have co-authored a paper for the conference titled, “Fake News? Implications of Blind and Constructive Patriotism on Perceptions of News Media.” Devlin will also present a second paper at the conference. Meanwhile, Assistant Professor Emily A. Ehmer will present research on media coverage of refugees: “Return Home or Remain Stranded? Myanmar’s Refugees Caught in the Middle of Travel Ban.” Dr. Shawna White , Lecturer in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication, is part of an interdisciplinary research team receiving the 2018 Best Published Article award from the ICA Children, Adolescents, and Media Division. Te award will be presented at the the 2018 annual meeting in Prague for the publication, “Relation between active mediation, exposure to Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, and US preschoolers’ social and emotional development.” Holly Wise was a guest facilitator at the March 2018 Associated Collegiate Press Midwinter Conference in Long Beach, California. She facilitated a three-hour workshop on solutions journalism. In March, Holly Wise began facilitating a four-week solutions journalism workshop for the University of Toronto Munk School of Global Afairs Fellowship in Global Journalism. Holly was also selected to be a Fulbright Scholar in India in 2019. STUDENT ACCOLADES Te Texas State University School of Journalism and Mass Communication will be represented on the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) National Committee this upcoming academic year. Rosa Ambriz , Texas State public relations senior and PRSSA member since 2017, has been elected as the PRSSA’s 2018-2019 National Vice President of External Afairs. Ambriz’s role as Vice President of External Afairs includes building relationships with key external audiences, engaging in traditional public relations eforts and taking an active role to promote the PRSSA Diversity Initiative and High School Outreach. [1] For the 11th year, graduate students in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication attended and covered the South By Southwest Interactive conference, led by Dr. Cindy Royal . Students designed the SXTXState.com website, previewed panels, interviewed speakers and used Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to promote the project on social media channels. Students met with SXSW personnel in December to kickof the initiative and will meet again to debrief SXSW staf in April. Students also took part in the 3rd TXST Innovation Lab and Reception at SXSW, where they were one of 16 teams to demonstrate innovative projects. [2] And for the second year, a group of 21 SJMC undergraduates, led by Dale Blasingame and Jon Zmikly , were selected to help SXSW cover this massive technology event. In January, the TXST Global News Team, a team of fve journalism and public relations students, went on an immersive study abroad trip to Guyana, South America to document the Texas State University Department of Respiratory Care’s frst independent study abroad program. [3] SJMC Lecturer Holly Wise led the study abroad trip. Tis was the SJMC’s frst study abroad program in South America. Te students produced more than 40 pieces of multimedia and written content. In March, they hosted a community-wide art exhibit at the Price Center and Tea Room in San Marcos, featuring some of their best work from Guyana. College of Fine Arts and Communication | 13
