Beebe published the seventh edition of Communication: Principles for a Lifetime with Susan J. Beebe and Diana K. Ivy. Steven and Susan also published the ffth edition of the Public Speaking Handbook . Tricia Burke received the College of Fine Arts and Communication College Achievement Award for Scholarly and Creative Activities for her research contributions. Marsha Burney was named a Bobcat Preview Namesake. [1] Students, faculty, and staf nominate members of the university community to be recognized for their incredible service to this university and for improving the collegiate experiences of Texas State students. Michael Burns just fnished managing the Olympic Runner Program for NBC’s Today Show at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics. Dr. Burns managed a team of 14 interns, which included two Texas State students: EunJeong Lee and John Lee . Dr. Burns and his interns spent six weeks in the PyeongChang region working behind the scenes and was responsible for assisting with all pre-production, production, and post- production logistics for the Today Show . His students had the opportunity to go on location shoots with talent and Olympians, work on stories showcasing Korean culture, worked directly with athletes to prepare them for their live interviews, and other production tasks. During their time in Korea they took over the Texas State Snapchat and received over 500,000 views from people all over the world. News stories about Michael and his students appeared on KXAN-Austin. [2] Stephanie Dailey received the College of Fine Arts and Communication Presidential Distinction Award for Teaching. Kristen Farris received the College of Fine Arts and Communication Presidential Distinction Award for Teaching. Rebekah Fox received the College of Fine Arts and Communication College Achievement Award for Service. Sean Horan , along with Alejandra Sorto of Mathematics, formed the Quality Enhancement Plan’s Development Task Force. Te committee will meet throughout Spring 2018 to further develop the University’s Quality Enhancement Plan, completed as part of SACSCOC accreditation. In addition, Sean was quoted in an article entitled “Will your relationship last? Depends on your investment,” which appeared on nerdwallet.com. His prior research on “Investing in Afection” was also cited in the article. He also provided expert commentary for the article, “¿Amigos por Tarifa?” Te article appears in the publication Revista Diners , one of Colombia’s oldest magazines. Maureen Keeley received the College of Fine Arts and Communication College Achievement Award for Scholarly and Creative Activities. Roseann Mandziuk was selected to receive a Fulbright Scholar Award in India for the Spring 2019 semester, where she will be assigned to a university to teach classes in communication and rhetoric. Tis is her second Fulbright Scholar Award; the frst was a 2011 teaching assignment in Poland at the Warsaw School of Social Sciences and Humanities. Roseann also received the College of Fine Arts and Communication College Achievement Award for Teaching. Miriam Sobre presented “Locating the vernacular in the virtual and the visual: Cultural and local mediated responses to global terror events” at the Western States Communication Association Conference in February. She also chaired the panel Between us and Asians: Mapping Intercultural Frictions at Home and Abroad, presented by the Intercultural Communication Interest Group. Sue Stewart received the College of Fine Arts and Com- munication Presidential Distinction Award for Service. STUDENT ACCOLADES M.A. student Giselle Divot and Steven A. Beebe presented a workshop entitled Audience-Centered Business Presentations for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services. M.A. student Michael Tahmoressi organized a Communication Studies Graduate Association service event for the Green Corn Project, an organization to educate and assist Central Texans in building organic food gardens so that they can have access to nutritious, afordable food. [3] Michael is a long-term volunteer of this organization, and he led fellow CSGA graduate students and faculty advisor Dr. Elizabeth K. Eger in a garden dig for Boys and Girls Club’s gardens in East Austin. Undergraduate students Nicole Tumlinson and Miguel Porfrio competed in the annual Battle of Flowers Oratorical Contest in San Antonio. Nicole earned second place honors and received $1,500 for her speech entitled: “Haley C. Stillwell: I’ll Gather My Geese.” Te Elton Abernathy Forensics Team attended the District III American Forensics Association National Individual Event Qualifer and earned several more qualifcations for national competition. Students that earned qualifcations were: Jaelyn Ashford , Matthew Anderson , Tyler Cole, Dillon McCoy , Lily Montemayor , Miguel Porfrio , and Tyshee Sonnier . DEPARTMENT ACCOLADES Te Department of Communication Studies hosted its 30th annual Communication Week, bringing a diverse collection of scholars and practitioners to campus to interact with students and share relevant experiences. Te Keynote Speaker was Dr. Jennifer Teiss, who described the conditions that promote uncertainty about relational involvement and the emotional, cognitive, and communicative outcomes of uncertainty for individuals College of Fine Arts and Communication | 7
