| March | College News 1 Youth Ensemble Music concert featuring the Hill Country Youth Chorus, Mariachi Infantil, and Te Texas State String Project 2 Middle School dance students attending Merge Dance Company’s free matinee on March 1st 3 Christa Oliver teaching East Austin College Prep and Fulmore Middle School dance students at the Patti Strickel Harrison Teatre IN THE COMMUNITY The Texas State College of Fine Arts and Communication has a long tradition of serving the San Marcos communit y. A sampling of recent projects include: MUSIC YOUTH ENSEMBLES Tree School of Music outreach projects for children and youths presented a wonderful joint concert on March 4th in Evans Auditorium. Te Hill Country Youth Chorus is directed by Lynn Brinckmeyer , assisted by accompanist Joung-A Yum and student interns Katie Wilson , Sara Trogdon , Anarra Whitcher , and Lyndsea Woodall . Mariachi Infantil is directed by John Lopez , assisted by interns Arianna Jeferson , Luis Leal , and Ivan Rodriguez . Te Texas State String Project is directed by Ames Asbell with master teachers Rebecca Tast and Karla Hamelin and interns Gregory Bowen , Mae Steven , Azariah Reese , Daniel Cavazos , and Izayah Gomez . Te concert concluded with an amazing feat, presenting all three groups, 61 children, performing together and singing in Spanish the tune, El Venadito. [1] All three of the youth ensembles provide opportunities for music learning to the greater San Marcos community. Children, adolescents and family members attend weekly rehearsals both on campus and of campus. Te three groups perform a variety of concerts in the surrounding community. Each of the ensembles ofers professional development experiences for students who are studying to become music educators. DANCE OUTREACH Christa Oliver organized the opportunity for 89 dancers from Simon Middle School, McCormick Middle School, and Wallace Middle School to attend Merge Dance Company’s free matinee on March 1st. [ 2] Te next week, 600 elementary school students attended free concerts presented by our dance ensemble CIM TEYA (Creation in Motion Touring Ensemble for Young Audiences). Christa Oliver taught a jazz masterclass at the Patti Strickel Harrison Teatre on March 8th for 40 dancers from East Austin College Prep and Fulmore Middle School. [ 3] HAVE AN IDEA ?! Award Management 512.245.6719 lisa@txstate.edu Te Resource Guide was created to help faculty fnd and obtain funding and provide support in managing C3 The Center for Communication, Collaboration & Creativit y (C3) ‘MATERIALS WITH INTELLIGENCE’ EVENT On Saturday March 2nd, Dr. Marian Houser and Dr. Michael Burns, COMM Studies faculty and founders of CoSearch, facilitated a unique “Materials with Intelligence” event for the College of Science and Engineering. During the daylong event at STAR Park, 26 faculty members from across the University pitched their innovative ideas before voting on and forming teams around the top fve projects. Te fve teams collaborated to refne their resources, methodology, and goals. Te event concluded with each team presenting their projects to a panel of special guests. Te fnal projects covered topics such as fexible solar cells, AR- VR training, eye tracking for feld training, radio waves and smart data, and wearable/digestible ETOH sensors. Following this event, each team submitted a proposal to the Materials Applications Research Center (MARC) for a chance to be awarded up to $10K in funding for their project. All fve teams received the funding. THE 5THANNUAL COSEARCH TEXAS STATE CoSearch Weekend is a two-day intensive retreat where multi-disciplinary teams of researchers and artists will collaborate to develop research plans that will be supported by C3 and carried out over the upcoming academic year. Te goal is to break down academic silos and bridge research and creative activity to produce cutting-edge and possible grant-funded projects that unite researchers and artists from the University.
