1 Te Texas State Wind Symphony performing for approximately 1500 attendees of the Texas Music Educators Association 2 Texas State Sting Project student teachers presenting at the 2019 National American String Teachers Association Conference 3 Lisa Spencer with three music students who performed at the Salon Presentation on February 24th 14 | March | College News MUSIC Music, Music Studies, Per formance, & Sound Recording Technolog y FACULTY ACCOLADES Dr. Caroline Beatty and Te Texas State Wind Symphony represented the School of Music and Texas State University at two prestigious conferences through highly-acclaimed performances. On February 15th, the Wind Symphony performed for approximately 1500 attendees of the Texas Music Educators Association in the Lila Cockrell Teatre in San Antonio. On February 22nd, the Wind Symphony had the honor to be one of ten ensembles selected from across the nation to perform over four days at the National Conference of the College Band Directors National Association in Tempe, Arizona. Conducted by Dr. Beatty with guest conducting by Dr. Kyle Glaser , the concert was presented in the historic Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Gammage Auditorium. [1] Te Texas State Bobcat Marching Band also represented the university at this important conference. Te band was selected through application to be a part of a presentation at the CBDNA conference showcasing fve university marching bands including those from Texas State, Michigan State, Arizona State, Ohio State and Clemson universities. Dr. Kyle Glaser and Mr. Matthew Holzner provided information about the Texas State Bobcat Marching Band and presented a video of the 2018 Space Show. BMB has been featured previously at the National CBDNA conferences in 2007, 2011, and 2013. Richard Hall composed, performed and recorded the music for two screen dance flms that were recently shown at international flm festivals. Shift , which was selected into the Dadasaheb Phalke International Film Festival in Mumbai, India, was produced and edited by Ana Baer . Another of Hall’s composition projects for dance on flm, Wild-er-ness , was selected for Seyr Festival of Screen-Movement and Media Arts in Teheran, Iran. It is a collaborative work between German dancer/ choreographer Heike Salzer, Texas State University Dance Department Head Michelle Nance and Ana Baer . Wild-er-ness was also selected for Cine-Corps Screening at the Teatre National de Bretagne, Rennes, France. Te Texas State Chorale directed by Joey Martin , the Conspirare Symphonic Chorus directed by Texas State Artist-in-Residence Craig Hella Johnson , and the Austin Symphony Orchestra directed by Peter Bay joined together for stunning performances of the Brahms Requiem . Johnson also conducted the Symphony performing Brahms’ Variations on a Teme by Haydn . Dr. Martin McCain recently completed a tour of Hong Kong in January. He led masterclasses and performed recitals at the Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He also gave an interview and performed on a live broadcast for Radio Television Hong Kong 4. In February, McCain also performed with the Colour of Music Festival Orchestra at the Carnegie Music Hall of Pittsburgh. STUDENT ACCOLADES Texas State String Project student teachers Azariah Reese , Chelsea Piel , Daniel Cavazos , Giselle Izaguirre , Logan Toeni , and Payton McIntyre presented as part of the “Best Practices in National String Project Consortium” session at the 2019 National American String Teachers Association Conference in Albuquerque. [ 2] Te session brought together String Project student teachers from universities across the United States to share current methodologies and approaches used in String Project classes. Te Texas State segment, titled “If You Don’t Want to See it Forever, Don’t See it Ever,” demonstrated tips and tricks to quickly extinguish classroom management issues before they become a problem. Te Texas State String Project is directed by Dr. Ames Asbell , with master teacher Dr. Rebecca Tast . Te Texas State University Trumpet Ensemble was named quarter-fnalists in the prestigious National Trumpet Competition to be held at the University of Kentucky in Lexington on March 14-16. Tis is the premier trumpet competition in the United States - quite an honor for the student players Jared Dunn , Esteban Bjoras , Noel Ayala-Loera , Diego Rosales , Avinda DeSilva , Alejandro Moncivais , and Joshua Salmon . Four School of Music music theory faculty were actively involved in the February 22-23 meeting of the Texas Society for Music Teory (TSMT) held at Texas State. Nico Schüler presented a paper titled “ Performance and Perception of Rubato: A Case Study on Four Performances of J.S. Bach’s Invention No. 9 in F minor.” Jose Garza shared his research at the poster session: “From the Stage to the Pit: Instrument Roles in and the Cultural Signifcance of Time Feels in Post-Millennial Metal Music.” Cynthia I. Gonzales is currently President of TSMT and Rebecca Eaton coordinated local arrangements. DONOR SPOTLIGHT On February 24th, Lisa and Jim Bob Spencer hosted the Fourth Annual Salon Presentation to raise money for the Spencer, Lockett, and Friends Scholarship fund for music majors. Te event drew an audience of 90 invited guests to hear student performers. A beautiful Steinway grand was provided by Deborah Moore of Steinway Gallery. Catering was provided by Monte and Kristin Shefeld of Palmer’s Restaurant. Generous matching gifts were provided by Sharon Lockett and Jim Bob Spencer . Voice professor Richard Novak organized the performers, including a jazz quartet and 14 classical music students. [ 3] Texas State opera coach Kristin Roach accompanied several, playing magnifcently on the Steinway brought in for the occasion. Over $27,000 in scholarship funds were raised at the event.
