College of Fine Arts and Communication | 3 1 Annie Miller’s solo exhibition Smells like Marcelle at Te Courtyard Gallery 2 Flor Barajas, Ti Nguyen, Nathaniel Haefner and Stephanie Long at the SXSW Innovation Lab on March 10th 3 Te exhibition @Addict_Angel_Diva collaboratively conceived by the students in Advanced Digital Photography Class 2 | March | College News ART AND DESIGN Art , Art Education, Art Histor y, Communication Design, Photography, & Studio Art FACULTY ACCOLADES Lana Waldrep Appl’s solo exhibition Surface/Space opened March 1 at Shockoe Art Space in Richmond, Virginia. Te opening reception was followed by an artist talk the following afternoon. Lana will also make an appearance on the gallery’s podcast Shockoe Artspeak . Exhibition runs through the end of May. Jefrey Dell will have a solo exhibition at the Galveston Art Center that opens April 27th, entitled, Maquette Moon . Jefrey presented a print and demonstration at the annual SGCI conference on March 8. Brian Johnson was invited to participate in a curated exhibition Worlds Apart: Comix & Fantasy Infuence in Prints , to be held at Constellation Studios gallery in Lincoln, NE from April to May. Brian will show 4 to 6 prints and drawings in this small group exhibit. Te show seeks to present the link between graphic cartooning, tattoo and fantasy drawing styles that are sources for expression and distillation by contemporary printmakers today. Jules Jones has a solo show at the Art Museum of South East Texas in Beaumont on view March 16-June 2. Alice J Lee , in collaboration with painter Melissa Oresky, will open Collage Ofce on March 23 at Te Franklin in Chicago. Collage Ofce is an 8-week participatory installation featuring over 20 artists that will create original artwork to participants by appointment on a donation-basis exchange. Mark Menjivar performed his project Migration Stories at the University of Texas at San Antonio in partnership with their master’s degree program in Social Work. Annie Miller’s solo exhibition Cage Match Project, Round Nine: I see london, I see france , closed on February 28th. Te project resides in the exterior lot of Te Museum of Human Achievement in Austin where it is under constant exposure to the elements and 24-hour public viewership. Annie’s solo exhibition, Smells like Marcelle opened February 19th at the Courtyard Gallery. Smells like Marcelle includes large-scale paintings, a video installation and a site-specifc wall drawing, on view through April 20th. [1] Soomin Remmler was featured in the February 2019 issue of Colored Pencil Magazine . Her art work was displayed on the cover and throughout the magazine. Jennifer Stob was an invited speaker on the panel, “Contemporary Art 101: Creating, Collecting and Preserving Contemporary Video Art,” Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio. A review of Gina McDaniel Tarver’s book Te New Iconoclasts: From Art of a New Reality to Conceptual Art in Colombia, 1961–1975 (Bogotá: Ediciones Universidad de los Andes, 2016) appears in the December 2018 issue of the Boletín Cultural y Bibliográfco (a publication of the Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango, Bogotá). Reviews of Art Museums of Latin America: Structuring Representation (New York: Routledge, 2018), an anthology co-edited by Gina and Michele Greet, are included in the December 2018 issue of Caiana: Revista de Historia del Arte y Cultura Visual (a publication of the Centro Argentino de Investigadores de Arte, Buenos Aires) and in the January 2019 issue of Latin American and Latinx Visual Culture (a publication of University of California Press, Los Angeles). STUDENT ACCOLADES M.F.A. students, Flor Barajas , Ti Nguyen , Nathaniel Haefner and Stephanie Long from the Data Visualization course presented their outcomes about the challenges in the City of Austin such as afordable housing, Austin Bike Infrastructure, Public Art in East vs West, and Bicycling in Austin at the SXSW Innovation Lab on March 10th. Te course was taught by MiHyun Kim , Assistant Professor of Communication Design at the School of Art and Design in Spring 2018. [ 2] Savannah Kuhn’s , a ceramic specialization student in Studio Art, piece “Curiositea” has been selected for the exhibition Tea Time at the Clay Center of New Orleans. Karly Schlievert had her work accepted to the ClayHouston 2019 Regional Biennial Exhibition Timeless Clay: Future Artifacts . Te exhibition will be held on March 4 – April 6 at the Houston Community College Central Visual Arts Gallery. @Addict_Angel_Diva is an exhibition collaboratively conceived by the students in Barry Stone’s Advanced Digital Photography Class. [ 3] Te instagram handle, pro le, and title of the exhibition were derived from an anagram of the letters in “Advanced Digital.” Te works in @Addict_Angel_Diva invite viewers to consider our complicit and antagonistic relationships to social media. ALUMNI ACCOLADES Lisa Haynes Cole (1998 ComDes Alum) recently designed lettering and all of the banners and way fnding signage for Texas State University Baseball and Softball stadiums. Art and Design alumnus Joshua Rios (Art History) is a resident at DiverseWorks as part of their project Collective Presence , which brings together multiple perspectives and interdisciplinary approaches to creative leadership and critical inquiry. GRAMMYNOMINATIONS Sarah Dodds (2004 ComDes Alum) and her sister Shauna Dodds were nominated for their ffth Grammy for Best Boxed or Special Limited-Edition Package design. Tey previously won a Grammy for Best Recording Package in 2016 and 2014. Tey won multiple Austin ADDY’s, District ADDY’s, and National ADDY’s. Tey founded Backstage Design Studio – a creative collective headquartered in Austin.
